From the perspective of presenting a top-down, very contemporary, articulate, complete, and thoroughly well-produced book, this reference gives you a handy all-in-one guide to system administration on Oracle Solaris 11.1. All the major and important system administration activities and procedures, as well as some minor facts which might seem trivial at first, but are actually very important, are covered in a clear and cogent way. If you had to wade through the huge volume of documentation provided by Oracle that comes with the software ( or use your Google-Fu), just to find out the details of some small fact or technique, you would realize how powerful this book really is. It will make your life with Solaris easier, like it did mine.Just a few examples: there is a section on dealing with removable media such as USB devices, drives, thumb drives. There is excellent coverage of Secure Shell, how to start it up, manage it, etc.. Those are practical and contemporary subjects that a modern UNIX System Administration book must cover. Also, there is extensive coverage of how to add packages to your base system via the command line, which is a very critical, practical System Administration topic!A tremendous added benefit- ZFS is covered and explained completely and beautifully!Even if this book cost 3 times what Amazon is charging, you must have it.Robert M. KoretskyUNIX: The TextbookEdited 4/7/14- A big benefit of using Solaris 11.1 instead of OpenIndiana (May the Computer Gods forgive me for espousing a commercial system over a freeware system) is that the IPS GUI Package Manager on Solaris 11.1 has access to more packages that actually can be installed on your system. Even though the author recommends and heavily illustrates using a command line version of the IPS Package Manager, I found that with the default Gnome desktop GUI and IPS GUI, I could download and install Python 2.7.3 with Tkinter built into it from the Solaris repository in a couple of easy steps. Very similar to using the command line pkg package management system in PC-BSD or FreeBSD to get new packages from the FreeBSD Repository.Edited 10/15/14- I'm into virtualization now, and it seems the common shortcoming of documentation on zones (this book included) is that no one tells you how to log into the zone from the Internet using ssh, FTP, or telnet, or how to actually install an application in the zone! For example, what IP address do you use to ssh into a zone running on a Solaris 11.2 machine, from somewhere on your LAN or the Internet? And as far as installing an application, I don't mean a full web server stack, just some simple app that you don't trust and want to put in a zone to test. This book shows you how to create and administrate zones (it is an administration book after all), but not how to actually use them in some simple cases! After all, it does do that with zfs. I'm hoping that the authors' advanced book will do that. http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/servers-storage-admin/o11-092-s11-zones-intro-524494.html is a web page at Oracle that has an excellent intro to zones, and shows in a few easy steps how to add apache-22 to a zone! Bravo! And the Oracle web page also adds the zone to rpool on the vdev that Solaris boots from- Dr. Calkins in his zone intro creates a new zpool on another hard disk for the zone. I don't quite get the rational for that.

While classic UNIX seems to be fading in favor of Linux, if you still use Solaris (Solaris 11.x), this book fills in the gaps where the Oracle manuals (while usually ok), aren't quite as clear. The SMF, ZFS, and networking were of particular interest to me and this book hit those targets pretty well. I still have Sun servers that were put into production in 2003 that are still humming along and doing what they need to do. We also have newer Sun equipment (M-series and T-series) that beat the pants off of their x86 counterparts. Especially when it comes to VM's. You just can't beat the Oracle VM's (zones) using VMWare. But, it does take competent administration on any system to keep peace amongst the user community. So, to fill in the gaps, this book was a big help.

Overall, the book was good for a transition from Solaris 10 or even Solaris 9 to the next generation of Solaris operating systems. For getting a system up and running and becoming familiar with it, this book will suffice. My interests extended beyond the scope of this book. Although zones were covered, there is a slim chance that I will use them so I glossed over this section. Maybe that is someone else's interest. My interest was the image packaging system, which was covered well. Then my interests reached into building a network server: installadm commands, creating services, DHCP, and building clients by Automated Installation over a network. It took a great deal of time referring to Oracle website postings to find the right commands. Finally, disaster backup and recovery using USB devices and Automated Install was not mentioned. Every competent System Administrator needs that training. For these advanced topics, the typical reader will have to spend a lot of time searching the Internet for bits and pieces of help. In the next revision of Solaris 11, I recommend those topics be included in step-by-step commands. For what I need, I compiled my own step-by-step document to be my primary instruction guide and will use the book for performance monitoring commands and maybe network filing system setups. This author's previous Solaris 8, 9, and 10 Administration Guides were much better at covering these topics.

Much of what is included in this book can be found at the publicly available docs for Solaris from Oracle. There are some tips that Oracle's Solaris documentation do not cover. It is up to the reader to determine whether or not those tips are worth the cost of this book.

Initially I buy this book for about 100 pages of ZFS of Solaris 11.1. And I love the NFS chapter because it covers both ways of NFS shares in Solaris 11 GA and in Solaris 11.1. Then, I go though a whole book and figure out that this is the best book I can get for Solaris 11.1 system admin.I buy one copy for each member in the project team. My colleagues love it also.Strongly recommended! Hope the "advanced one" by the same author will publish soon.

Great reference book!

Overall a good book. The only issue I saw was in the ACLs section. For Solaris 11 it should have been the chmod commands and not setfacl sincethe file system is ZFS and uses NFSv4 styled ACLs.

Didn't apply much to my specific tasks.

I've seen the Bette Davis movie, and positively loved it. She won the Best Actress Academy Award for her role. I always wondered more about the middle of the story. Reading the book fills in the middle, give us more of an indication on why these 2 people fall so devotedly in love. What happens in 2 days or so in the movie, covers about 5 or more days in the book. In the film much of the story takes place on a cruise ship in South America... In the book, it's a cruise ship along the coast of Southern Europe... This change possibly due to when filming was done, related to WWII, and most likely access to safer / undamaged areas for filming. The book starts a bit differently than the film as well, but still gives you more of the back story, overall.I found this book to be highly rewarding, a wonderful story over-all. Yes, there is sacrifice, but there is also so much love overall, with in the story, our 2 main characters, and more.

This was extremely difficult to review in today’s terms. Given the era it was written in we have to take things in context, for example the fact it is only after a weight and clothes metamorphosis that Charlotte finds confidence. That it took this change for men to find her attractive seems sexist, trivialising the situation and putting women back a few years, but here it makes sense. This is about someone whose confidence has been taken away, someone who has a breakdown and who somehow finds the strength to change for herself because she recognises the need. Yes it is initially because of a man but it’s not quite that simple either for he is the opposite of the alpha male. He is just a nice man trying to do the right thing for those he loves and in some ways someone afraid to stand up for himself. We as readers feel he would have seen past Charlotte no matter her surface looks because he is again, a nice man even ordinary. The important thing here is that subconsciously she knows that and this is the reason she gains in strength. It’s not the lover who brings the changes out in her, it’s the essence of the man, this particular man who has a good heart. There are depths in the plot that are fascinating and enthralling once we understand we have to read beyond the words, and understand the era and subtlety of the author’s design. There is so much more here than simple romantic love and it makes us reflect hard on our own beliefs. In this novel passionate and sex filled scenes don’t exist but love most definitely does exist. After the novel ends (this particular edition I think) there are some additional notes/studies about the plot, writing and the author. This gave a sweetened insight coming as it did, from professionals in the profession, and is very worthwhile reading just on its own. You don’t need the analysis but it is an amazing learning curve and I highly recommend it.Final thoughts - I loved it.

This is a story about a woman transformed from a spinster-like quality of life to one of engagement and personal fulfillment. That old adage, "All you need is love", seems to be true in this novel about romance on the high seas and in the mansion on Marlborough Street, Boston. The book is meant to be contemporaneous with the times in which it was published. The transformation of Charlotte Vale to Camille then back to Charlotte-reborn, may be a bit schmaltzy for contemporary tastes, yet it's still a classic in its own right. 'Now Voyager' was classified as "pulp" fiction meant for mass readership in the nineteen forties. However, this book was much more than "pulp" to me. Finding the "will" to love and the "love" to will is one of many themes fundamental to Prouty's novel. The story is made sweet by the simplicity of this theme. It is made unforgettable by the beauty and style of its prose. Few characters adorn this novel. There are few highs, and few lows. Sometimes beautiful things come in small packages, and this package is both small and beautiful. If you experienced your mother as over-bearing and controlling, then you probably could identify with Charlotte's struggle to free herself from the bonds of maternal love ambiguously expressed. We call this process , separation-individuation, and without becoming too clinical, good parenting is about facilitating this process. In Charlotte's case, her mothers' over-protection and hypercritical style left her with gaping holes in her emotional development it takes a full novel in space and time, to fill. In real life, Charlotte steps out of the novel and onto the screen, catapulting its star, Bette Davis, and the movie version to new heights. Who among us can forget that stunning woman slightly shielded by the brim of her enormous hat, stepping off the runway of the cruise ship? What happens on that cruise and who she meets is what makes this novel -movie about love. What happens in the aftermath of Charlotte's seduction, is a story about redemption. In the spirit of this enduring psychological portrait, we learn that although our experiences make us who we are, how we deal with the pain is what defines us. I highly recommend the movie adaptation as it captures the times, the setting, and its characters with Prouty's characteristic intent. Isn't her message all about letting go, rather than holding on?

Schreiner, Thomas R. and Matthew R. Crawford, editors. The Lord's Supper: Remembering and Proclaiming Christ Until He Comes. Volume 10 of NAC Studies in Bible & Theology. Nashville, TN: B&H Academic, 2010. 413 pp. $24.99.At only a few pages shy of four-hundred pages of written text, the book covers a significant amount of territory related to the Lord’s Supper. Because of the vast amount of essays, the review below, in order to meaningfully cover the book’s more notable aspects, will be somewhat selective in its evaluation of essays. The entire book will be noted and reviewed, but specific chapters and topics will be more carefully noted. Further, since the book is an anthology, it is spatially difficult to remark upon the achievements of each contributing author and their academic expertise warranting their input on the subject. The reader of the book is encouraged to note each author’s credentials which are noted at the beginning of each essay. The volume is noteworthy overall, like so many in the NAC Studies in Bible & Theology series, and merits the attention of any reader interested in generalized expertise in both biblical and theological discussions of the Lord’s Supper.Summary with Evaluative RemarksAndreas J. Köstenberger writes the first essay “Was the Last Supper a Passover Meal?” (6-30). There is a significant amount of ground covered in his essay since a few critics (including Scot McKnight, 9 n.7) have written against the meal’s paschal nature, but Köstenberger does a fine job managing the data. One needless complication in his chapter is an issue Köstenberger feels is “at stake” in the debate (8), and that is the doctrine of inerrancy, since the Synoptic Gospels and John have a somewhat discordant chronology. When it is understood that John favors paschal theology over chronology (John 1:29; Rev 5:12), the issue does not nearly press itself as some might feel, and this is the opinion of several conservative New Testament scholars, including Craig S. Keener and Darrell L. Bock. In pages 9-17 Köstenberger provides the common arguments given against a paschal understanding of the Supper but provides firm rebuttals. Here the influential work of Joachim Jeremias’ work is extensively noted, The Eucharistic Words of Jesus. What is particularly noteworthy about Köstenberger’s essay, however, is what comes next in his final section discussing evidence favoring a paschal reading. Extensive use of Rabbinic material is marshalled, and here Köstenberger’s impressive research and careful writing and logic really shine.Jonathan T. Pennington’s essay “The Lord’s Last Supper in the Fourfold Witness of the Gospels” (31-67) also covers a lot of ground. Pennington treats the Last Supper account holistically based on each Gospel’s presentation, including the far too often neglected Johannine Gospel. After briefly surveying all four Gospels, including recent scholarship (31-41), Pennington provides a positively remarkable account of common themes (or “nodes of meaning,” 43) among them, including: (a) the Passover as an enacted parable of Jesus’ coming sacrificial death; (b) the fulfillment of the Passover festival and the new exodus; (c) the inauguration of the new covenant; (d) the Supper as a community forming event; and lastly (e) the Supper as a marker of the coming eschatological banquet (42-58). Pages 58-65 further elaborate on each Gospel’s distinctive voice. The third essay (of thirteen), “The Lord’s Supper in Paul: An Identity-Forming Proclamation of the Gospel,” is by James M. Hamilton Jr. (68-102). He begins by noting the contextualizing 1 Corinthians 10 and 11 in light of the entire epistle (69-76), and from here he moves to his central thesis that the Lord’s Supper has an identity-shaping nature (77-100). In a church torn by factionalism Paul presents the Lord’s Supper as a fellowship in the body of the Savior, which is a sharing in the redemptive work of Christ. Hamilton’s essay rightly emphasizes the corporate nature of engaging in the Lord’s Supper and critically draws out the pastoral theology of Paul in his historical dealings with the ethically and theologically misguided Corinthians.Essays six, seven, eight, and nine are taken together since they treat, respectively, the theology of the Last Supper in Roman Catholicism (Gregg R. Allison, 151-92), Martin Luther (Matthew R. Crawford, 193-228), Ulrich Zwingli (Bruce A. Ware, 229-247), and traditional Reformed theology, namely John Calvin and the Westminster Confession of Faith (Shawn D. Wright, 248-84). The repristination of church history and theology throughout this period is wonderfully accomplished. Though working independently, each author manages to create a unified discussion covering the full spectrum of the Lord’s Supper theology in both medieval Catholicism and the Reformation periods. Despite the volume’s Baptist perspective (as Thomas Schreiner notes in the Epilogue, 391), the care to present each tradition’s theology in non-polemical ways allows the reader to understand more readily the importance of the discussion as it unfolded historically, and also invites the trust of careful readers evaluating not just what is discussed but how it is discussed. The controversy essentially centers on whether the elements are understood to be the real body and blood of Christ, or rather seen as a sign which only signify the body and blood of Christ. The Roman Catholic church espouses a realistic understanding (180-1). The church also administers grace through the sacraments, and this can be observed from the manner in which the sacrament itself is conducted, with the priest first receiving the sacrament before offering it to the church (152-5). The priest functions as Christ, the great high priest (158). Concerning the elements, Catholic teaching explicitly states: “the whole Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained” in them (160). The elements are the ‘substance’ of Christ (‘substance’ is taken in the technical, Aristotelian sense, 168), and this is so by means of transubstantiation (160). Augustine built upon Aristotelian philosophical notions and sacramental theology was forever wed to Roman Catholic dogma; specifically in understanding the sacraments as “communicating grace ex opera operato – literally, by the work performed” (166). Further, the sacraments are necessary for salvation (160). In the closing evaluation, Allison objects that the sacraments are simply symbolic of the real person and work of Christ, not the body and blood in reality (182). Overall, the essay, while being confusingly arranged, mainly discusses earlier Catholic theology, making much of Augustine and the Council of Trent, though the author acknowledges this to a degree (176-7).Luther, while resolutely objecting to the whole sacramental system in Catholicism, since the sacraments were said to merit grace, nevertheless maintained a realistic view of Christ’s presence in the elements. But he despised the idea that Christ was sacrificed anew in each eucharistic celebration (199). He also notably focuses on the importance of faith (195-9, 201-2). Luther adamantly stood by the reality of Christ in the elements, which subsequent theologians identified as “consubstantiation” (209). While Luther had done much to counter Roman Catholic errors, he would not concede to his Reformed interlocuters, specifically Zwingli, in his understanding of the elements (210-19). Crawford’s evaluation helpfully points out Luther’s error in exegeting Last Supper texts in Scripture, noting as unfounded his literal emphasis (219-228).Ware’s essay on Zwingli is fluidly written and critically clear. Zwingli was a Genevan Reformer who understood the Lord’s Supper primarily as a memorial meal (230-2). Zwingli also spoke of Christ’s “spiritual presence” in the elements (240-3), something he shared with Calvin. Ware’s closing evaluation is excellent in summarizing Zwingli, particularly his controversy with Luther at Marburg (244-7).The Reformed Tradition essay by Wright includes reflections on both Calvin and the Westminster Confession. The Reformed tradition understands, surprisingly, the Lord’s Supper as a means of grace while at the same time denying Roman Catholic ex opera operato notions (255-6). Calvin equivocates some in his theology and Wright picks up on this when he quotes him as saying, “when we have received the symbol of the body, let us no less surely trust that the body itself is also given to us” (267). Is it a symbol or the real thing? Ultimately, Calvin understands the presence of the body and blood of Christ in the elements as a “mysterious work of the Holy Spirit” (268; 267-71). Wright’s analysis of Calvin in the closing evaluation helpfully appropriates Baptist theology and creeds, noting how Baptists have distanced themselves from Westminster on the point of sacraments (279). Surprisingly, this was the first essay in the book to address the Lord’s Supper with respect to Baptist teaching.Gregory A Wills’ essay, “Sounds from Baptist Theology,” focuses almost exclusively on closed and open communion (285-312). This is unfortunate sense he pens the essay on Baptist theology. No confessions or significant Baptist theologians are regarded. Brian J. Vickers pens the essay “The Lord’s Supper: Celebrating the Past and Future in the Present” (313-40). Vickers focuses on memory and memorialism in Old Testament festivals, chiefly the Passover. Gregory Alan Thornbury writes the essay “The Lord’s Supper and Works of Love” (341-63), noting some very sober thoughts concerning the outlook for Baptist tradition (358f). The final essay of Ray Van Neste continues with the closing thoughts of Thornbury by discussing “how we practice this ordinance in the local church,” and suggests “some ways to improve our practice” (364-90). Neste’s essay is titled “The Lord’s Supper in the Context of the Local Church.” Many of his points are sobering and call attention to the high-church traditions’ power to compel Baptists away from their sound theological roots, a point that Thornbury also raised.ConclusionAs a Baptist book on the subject, the lack of a specific Baptist theological understanding of the Last Supper is a cause for some disappointment, particularly when there are so many excellent Baptist theologians to involve, such as Carl F. H. Henry, Donald A. Carson, Millard Erickson, etc. Overall, the work of the contributors is excellent and the writing is almost always very compelling.

Very good book on the history and theology of the Lord's Supper.

Excellent collection of essays. Deals well with both the theological and practical questions of the Lord's Supper. Well worth the cost.

A comprehensive survey of biblical text and history of doctrine. A practical note how to apply all implications of Communion in a local church. From a Baptist perspective, but also include and review other traditions (Catholic, Reformed, Lutheran).

purchased this for my son for school

What a book! I highly recommend this as to anyone who is interested in knowing why we practice Communion. The chapters by Gregory Wills and Ray van Neste were worth the price of the book; add in the rest of the essays and you have an excellent, readable, scholarly explanation of the Baptistic understanding of the Lord's Supper.

Great over view from a Conservative Baptistic perspective.

Did not want to read another book, but this one was cool!

So, yes, I read the whole book. 600+ pages of both the first & second book. Read the 2nd one in about a week. I couldn't put it down. Both were very depressing and the second made me want to scream and shake Julia by the shoulders. These were the longest books and the worst stories that I absolutely had to finish...and ordered the last in the series. (will start that one today) The books are really well written and suck you in. So even though the stories were awful and depressing and nothing good was ever happening...you could count on that as you read, I had to finish the whole book and couldn't put it down. Would I recommend the series? No. She has written so many better books. But, if you start reading it, you will read all of them. They are like driving by a car crash...you just can't help but look. Really makes me wonder about the author if these were her first novels. It really is disturbing and depressing material. Still love her writing style, just wish these would have been a little more uplifting instead of tragic.

the 2nd in the Wideacre trilogy. Daughter of brother/sister lovers has a love affair with her supposed cousin who is actually her brother from the same siblings in the first book. Siblings having sex with one another then have 2 children a boy and a girl who then have sex when they grow up.Horrid story.

I love Philippa Gregory and have read just about all she has written in historical fiction. I looked forward to the Wildacre trilogy - something I haven't read! I didn't think this could be worse than Wildacre (the the violence, S&M, and dark themes) well I was wrong. If rape, murder and senseless violence is what you are looking for - this is it! Nicely written. Slow paced. But the subject manner is not something I want to read about! Not for teens!

What a terrible book. After reading Wideacre I couldn't wait to read The Favoured Child and quickly bought it online. Such a waste of money, and even if I hadn't paid for it- what a waste of time! How does an author create such a strong character with such a great story then follow up with such a spineless, useless, lily-livered girl as her heroin?! I'm 70% through the book just because I keep hoping something will happen or things will get better but NOTHING happens and then when it does its so frustrating i can't stand it!! I wish I'd just left it at wideacre and never bought this stupid book. Don't read it, it's awful. I don't think I'll read anything from Phillipa Gregory ever again.

"Same song. Second verse. Could be better, but I think it's worse." That just about sums it up for me. I won't give anything away; you'll have to read it for yourself. I am a "rabid" fan of Phiilippa Gregory, but this novel left me with a taste in my mouth that wasn't pleasant. I think all three novels in the trilogy would probably make a great TV series or even a movie... Don't people ever learn.? Does history have to repeat its self? I was sick & kept hoping things would turn out different. The novel took up a lot of my evenings, so you could say, I was entertained. I can't say I wasn't warned, but like most people, I had to see for my self. Now it's your turn....

I'm a huge Philippa Gregory fan, but this is not one of her best. It's the second of a trilogy - the first being Wideacre (which I bought in paper form and loved). The main character, Julia Lacey, is set to inherit Wideacre along with her cousin, who we know from the first book, is also her brother. It's an interesting enough premise, but Julia is one of the weakest, wishy-washy characters of any book I've read. So many times through the reading of this book, I was ready to throw the book across the room in frustration. I kept reading only because I'm a die-hard Philippa Gregory devotee and I kept hoping (praying) the character would grow a set and get rid of her horrible brother/cousin. If anyone else had written this book, I would have abandoned it.In short, it was disappointing.

This book is definitely my favorite one of the trilogy. Although it ended up breaking my heart, it was the most fun and anxiously filled page turning novel of the three. Very well written, Gregory knows how to reel you in and make you feel everything for the characters, both the good and the bad.

The whole Meriden series of 3 books kept me up until all hours of the night reading. I bought this for my sister while she was visiting (she borrowed the other 2 from me) and watched her suffer through several 2 hour nights of sleep because she couldn’t put the books down. At times while reading this series, I had be “rewind” and re-read a section because I couldn’t believe what just happened. I’ve read most of Philipa Gregory’s books and this series is among my favorites. She really knows how to bring historical fiction to life.

A decent book, but way overrated here. How many people could read the last chapter (13 - Power Trains) and get anything practical out of the mind-numbing detail? There are also several sloppy mistakes throughout the text that make it a bit difficult to follow at times: a lowercase "L" ("l") becomes a "1" in the lever formula (original formula is on 1-4, incorrect versions are on 3-1, 4-1); typos in numbers (e.g. "10" is written instead of "20" on 6-5); "330" is a typo instead of "300" on 3-4; etc. For a book without much math in it, they could have been more meticulous with the little bit they did include.Assuming you know absolutely nothing about machines (like me) -- then this is a good book if you read the first 12 chapters (not really counting chapter 11, which is way too diffuse to be useful), and if you're careful with all the Navy jargon ("block" = "pulley", "tackle"="fall"="rope", etc.).Assuming you already know how all the machines work, this book will probably be a handy refresher and review.

Got this book as a gift for my father, a former Navy Machinest's Mate. He loved it and it brought back old memories. The lessons were clear and concise with the text and copious detailed graphics working well together. Basic Machines and How They Work starts with explaining the classical simple machines, lever, inclined plane, pully and its relation to the lever, compound pully, and screw and its relation to the inclined plane. Book then proceeds to combine these simple machines and explain how these simple machines build up to more complicated mechanical structures: clutches, transmissions, and internal combustion engines, all with a sailor's point of view and sprinkled with nautical jargon. A good basis, too, for high school physics students.

I was in the Navy so I'm partial I guess but I think this is a great book for anyone. Great basics of machines, physics and mechanics. A really good introduction or refresher. If you're thinking about going in to Engineering or Physics get this book and commit to knowing this stuff really really well. It will serve you the rest of your life/career.Math needed is simple algebra. Good diagrams and pictures and great examples for added context.

Good book for a crash course in basic machinery. The graphics are a little hard to see, but after enough staring you can visualize the gears turning, the pulleys rotating, and the differential working. Recommended.

It appears a lot of the contents in this book were barrowed from older Navy training manuals. I would suspect in response to the outbreak of WWII when we needed a lot of everything quickly not to mention trained personnel to operate, maintain and repair the ships, aircraft and myriad of associated equipment. This book presents solid basics every mechanic, builder or operator, no matter their experience level can use to learn how to do their job better. In 2017 this book would be excellent for new DIYers and "old hands". to learn or re-learn the basics of how things work. I have over 20 years of experience as an aircraft mechanic in the military and in the first few minutes of perusing this book I learned something new. This an excellent reference book for anybody owning and maintaining a house or vehicle.

This is a very fundamental text and as such it is a excellent basis for further study in the subjects of mechanics and physics. You would be surprised how most people especially the younger generation, though clearly comfortable with current technology especially the use of electronic devices, cannot grasp the simple concept of a lever arm or why you need to understand geometry, trig functions, basic physical properties of fluids, etc... Anyway, I liked it and I keep it handy on my desk for occasions when simple examples are required for clarification purposes. A good follow on text is "Making Things Move" by Dustyn Roberts, also well written for the layman, student or hobbyist.

This is an awesome little book. For those who have taken some basic science classes, a good part of it will be review. But, it gives clear and simple explanations of a lot of different types of basic machinery which you won't find in many other books. If you want a short primer on basic machinery, this is the book for you.

I had hoped there would be more information. Maybe newer machines. For a biginner this would be fine. The information in the book is the same as a bigginers statics class. The paper back book looks like it was scaned and bounded. I could not find the date of the first printing ... It looks like the 1950's maybe older.
