Better than Hyena. Jude has really come into his own on this book. Crazy tales of sex and drugs and self doubt. An exploration into the depths of a man who both knows exactly what he wants in life, but is also constantly contemplating the existence of what is possible. Deep, dark, wildly amusing... the kind of guy who will have your back; help you bury a body, and give you the best tips for the most incredible music on the planet Earth. This book tells the story of a man loving life, searching for the ulimate satisfaction, and the ability to craft a yarn to convey his self-disappointment, doubt, and acceptance of the short, wild ride we all take for a few decades.
I'm 2 chapters into this book, and I'm already more committed to it than most relationships I've been in. Its gritty and real. Extremely relatable.
No book has kept me wanting to read more than Hummingbird. Don't be fooled by the amazing artwork and name, this book is raunchy as hell. Jude Angelini extends on his straight up truthful demeanor and humor, giving us insight into many experiences Jude has faced in his life. Don't expect a heartwarming bird story, because if you buy this book and give it a crappy rating because it wasn't what you were experiencing, then you just didn't do your research and you're a fool for spending your money on something you didn't know you were getting. Check Jude out on Shade45 (SiriusXM) where he has the best and funniest radio show. You can listen just to him speaking minus the music On Demand. If you like this, you'll love his first book Hyena. Buy multiple copies, buy the audiobooks, buy the special edition vinyl. I’ll start by saying while I am not a fan of the show (just not my thing), my s.o. loves it and this is how Jude’s books became purchased.Why should you buy the book if you’re not a fan of the show? Jude is able to tell stories like no other author (regarding autobiographies). The book is refreshing, honest, and one of a kind. You’ll get glimpses into his life from when he was a child to current times. The stories in Hummingbird have a more serious tone than Hyena, yet you still get a decent amount of his drug and sex adventures. With this being said, the book is for adults.We purchased the audio version of both books (Hyena & Hummingbird) and listened to them in car during travels. If you’re on the fence about purchasing his book/s, I’d recommend purchasing the audiobooks- there’s something about how Jude tells his stories that adds to the experience (he is the narrator of his books).Would recommend his books if you’re looking for something different than your typical autobiography or something that will make you feel (laugh, cry, etc.).
Hummingbird is for everyone who cares about authenticity. Jude is funny, vulgar, and heartbreakingly honest. In one moment you're laughing at the absurd depths of his depravity, and in the next, you're crying at his frank and beautiful description of the most dark and definitive moments of his life. He writes from an extremity of intimacy that both ignores and highlights his vulnerability as an intensely private and necessarily public person. He tells you everything and then forces himself to say even more. His work is transformative and the growth of his expression from Hyena to Hummingbird speaks to an important and revolutionary moment on the horizon, not only for Jude, but for everyone who has and continues to create space for him in the world of memoir and culture. This is a must read and I can't wait for more.
An incredible follow-up to the stellar "Hyena". Angelini has the most unique and engaging voice since Bukowski (and before him, Hemingway). Sure, many of these stories veers towards smut at times, but Angelini always manages to reel it back, and turns seemingly gratuitous vulgarity into a heard-rending story. Seriously, for any white male that grew up in a low-income, diverse (i.e. no more than 50% white demographically) area in the Midwest, this book resonates with an uncanny truth that has never been honestly depicted with any sort of sympathy before "Hyena" and now "Hummingbird"'s release.
A great read. Dark and comical, Will definitely make you laugh out loud. Hummingbird let's you experience what life is like for Jude Angelini . If you've never experienced illicet drugs or casual hook ups this book puts you as a fly on the wall. It's like I'm watching a movie reading this. Jude is a awesome story teller. I finished this book in one freaking day. So good I couldn't put it down. Kinda upset when I finished because I wanted more. I love this book more than Hyena(also a good read ) . I feel you could really see the growth of Jude's writing from the last book. Buy this book it's pretty DOPE. Would make a great book for your coffee table, because you wouldn't expect the words in it with the cover and all. Shout out to Jude. I think he's a Genius with a talent that couldn't be replaced. I don't feel like he gets enough credit for his dopeness while he's here with us. Can't wait for the next book
