Dear me, what a ride. When I read the name Poppy McVie I expected something sugar sweet and inane. Just imagine my surprise when this novel turned into a fast paced tour de force through the exotic animal world and the people who sacrifice them to feed their greed. I learned a lot more about Costa Rica than I knew and I can hardly wait to read another Poppy McVie adventure. Reading this book makes me question Amazon's rating system. The writing is very amateurish and the plot disjointed. How can this be rated so highly? I bought it because I was going to Costa Rica and thought it would be fun...but after several pages of being bored, I moved on to a much better book.
I read all four of this author’s books and they were mediocre at best. The dialogue was not realistic during many of the situations. The main character, “Poppy†was a wildlife officer that should have been fired for insubordination. The author also used the word, “aholdâ€, many times. For me this was annoying because I don’t think there is such a word as “aholdâ€. The plots were average. It was easy to put down these books. I don't think I would read any more of this author's books

Awesome book! The suspense built from the first chapter and continued right through to the end. Poppy McVie was a very believable heroine, having great fighting skills, while making some judgement errors, and ultimately using her own creativity to solve problems. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and I read it straight through at one sitting. I definitely will be reading more of Poppy's adventures and urge anyone who loves a good story, a lot of action, and just the right amount of romance to immediately get reading! I am sure Poppy McVie will have enough to keep you interested.
This is an excellent adventure with a gutsy USFWS agent working undercover in Costa Rica. Poppy McVie's attitude could be summed up as "Lead, follow, or get out of my way!" Definitely my kind of fearless crusader for wildlife. I'm glad to have discovered this new author, and I can't wait to pick up the sequel to this book.
Interesting setting, not badly written, and some clever plot twists, especially toward the end. But the heroine is a one trick pony. For her, everything is seen through the lens of animal rights/cruelty. I realize that this is the author’s passion, but in a work of fiction, it’s laid on much too thick for my taste. There’s one bit of gratuitous violence that doesn’t provide insight about the plot or characters, but seemed to be included just to shock the reader. Also, the heroine’s predilection for lusting after nearly every man she meets seems forced. Some of the men she meets are so personality challenged or downright rude that it would be hard to imagine any real woman being interested in them.
