Bought this book for a BS nursing program. I don't usually write reviews for textbooks, but as a book lover, I have to give compliments when they are due! This book is very progressive regarding its content and perspective. After so much of the same content in nursing school that dryly proclaims the importance of leadership and contributing to the profession, I frequently found my eyes widening while reading this book. Somehow, the authors consistently, boldly, and beautifully call for and describe the transformative leadership that is so needed in nursing today. I can't put my finger on what it is, as I have not read the entire book (we were assigned sections)––but I just kept thinking, "Wow, I've never seen it said like that (in nursing). That's awesome!" This book is relevant, well-written, and full of paradigm-shifting inspirational material.

I purchased this book as a requirement for a leadership class.The typeset is light blue and unusually small.This made the book difficult to read.I usually purchase my textbooks as Kindle versions; however, when I purchased this book in August the Kindle version was not available.I would recommend the Kindle version as a opposed to the paperbook version of this book.

I'm taking a star off because this book is almost entirely made up of quotes from other authors. If you were to remove all text that is between quotation marks, it would only be 5 pages long. The back to back quotes make for hard reading and I would have preferred more original text from the author.

Do not spend money on this. I've never seen anything more crammed with meaningless cites--no quotes, no bullets, nothing to tell you exactly what it was that the reference author was saying. This book violates every law of academia writing and is full of half truths and implied associations with famous, reputable authors. Case in point:". . . Many creative, motivated, and enthusiastic individuals thrive on chaos and are most successful in their personal and professional lives, despite the incredibly confusing climate in which they function. Hawking (1987) views this uncertainty as opening the way to randomness and unpredictability that are perceived by many as refreshing."The authors, Sheila Grossman and Theresa Valiga have the unmitigated gal to cite Stephen Hawking in A Brief History of Time. I sure as heck do not recall reading any such drivel, paraphrased or otherwise, in that book. Grossman and Valiga list A Brief History of Time as published in 1987---it was not published until 1988!In the opening paragraph of Grossman and Valiga's chapter six, a chapter dedicated to masculine vs feminine management styles (don't get me going on that topic--this book is a turd if ever I've been forced to read one) they carry their perplexing and misleading habit of plastering you with meaningless citations to a new all time low:"Most studies about leaders and leadership focus on men and the male perspective. Although this information is valuable, and much of what we know about leadership--the need to have a vision, the reciprocal relationship between leaders and followers, the willingness to take risks and so on---has broad applicability, it still is rooted in a masculine framework. A growing body of literature, however, notes differences in the ways women lead (Austen, 2002; Babcock & Laschever, 2003; Felder, 1996; Gordon, 1991; Grunswald, 1992; Helgesen, 1990; Kaufman & Grace, 2011; Keohane, 2010; Klenke, 1996; Kram & Hampton, 1998; Lambert & Gardiner, 2009; Lipman-Blumen, 1992; Long, 1998; May, 2001; Melia & Lyttle, 1986; Paludi & Coates, 2011; Rosener, 1990; Salas-Lopez, Deitrick, Mahady, Gertner, & Sabino, 2011; Schein, 1989; Sylvia, Grund, Kimminau, Ahmed, Marr & Cooper, 2010; Yudd, 2010). Because most nurses are women, understanding gender perspectives in leadership is an essential area of exploration."Now tell me what was the point of plastering those three sentences with 20 cites?This book is a useless turkey that should not find its way into the classroom or boardroom. It buries the few good points it might have other wise made with ten chapters of drivel and the so called annotated is only a partial list of the references, so still no clue what these two are babbling about most of the time. Oh and most of the book's references are as old as I am.

The text is pretty redundant and it's all in paragraph form (no bullets or lists), so it's difficult to reference points of the text. There were a few good points buried in between the repetition and filler, but they were few and far between.

Easy to read

Had to read it for school, the book of a million different ways of saying the same thing over and over.

It is hard to believe Steve died nearly seven years ago. I bought this book right after it was published but just got around to reading it. Terri did a great job describing their first chance encounter with Steve in what ultimately lead to them getting married. It was awesome to read about all their adventures through the years. Steve was definitely born to fulfull the role of the Crocodile Hunter. He was born and breed into this role. As you read through the book you will see how dedicated and passionate he was about wildlife conservation. As an animal lover myself I can truly appreciate all his efforts through the years.The crocodiles have been truly blessed to have someone in this lifetime fighting for them. His work will be felt for years and probably carried on by his children. I truly believe Steve and Terri were meant to meet and have this wonderful life together. Steve should have died probably dozens of times before that fateful day in the ocean. It is ironic how he died in such a freak accident by a stingray. His death was tragic but this guy died doing what he loved best. Besides being torn away from his family in death I don't believe he had any regrets. I ranked this book a four versus a five because sometimes Terri went in too much detail about a particular adventure and I found myself skimming through paragraphs. I would still recommend this book to anyone that is a Steve or wildlife fan.

I WAS A HUGE STEVE IRWIN FAN and cried for weeks after his death. For Terri, Bindi, Bob and Baby Bob. Wes and the gang too. Terri tells a beautiful love story, but her focus isn't simply about their lives together. NO SPOILERS, BUT...You will be truly amazed at some of Steve's other "hobbies" (Think, letting off steam).This charming, sensitive man...a man who wasn't afraid to cry, was most definitely ALL MAN! His absolute devotion to animals and conservation made him, literally, a WORLD ASSET! His death was too soon, but he somehow always knew it. He lived life to the fullest. Loved his wife, and children like no other and even almost 8 years later, my heart still breaks for Terri.My ONLY consolation is, he died a quick, probably painless death. What angered me where the massive killings of Stingrays afterwards in his "honor" THE LAST THING HE'D HAVE WANTED!This is a book I will definitely read several times, which is something I just don't do. However, Terri and I are not only the same age, we grew up less than 100 miles apart and share a love of wildlife to no end.Should Steve ever decide to come back as a ghost (No, I don't believe in them, this is tongue in cheek), it will probably be the day Bindi starts dating.The world lost a wonderful man that terrible day, but Terri is doing everything humanly possible to keep the work going, thus keeping him alive. Bindi too.CLICHE' ALERT: THIS IS A MUST READ!

My heart goes out to Terri, and theirs is a good story. I have always believed that the best relationships to grow into love are those that begin with liking one another. This is an honest book that at times leads you right into the "raw zone" of the all too human, physical loss of a loved one, but also encourages each of us to be brave and continue to follow your dreams, your work, your passion. Terri is a good Mom and I feel, a very good inspiration to other single Moms out there. Nature and wildlife care and study are healthy choices.

Steve Irwin is my wild life hero he inspires me to be the wild life warrior I want to become in the next few years his passing still gets me every time I am with animals I always think what would steve do I help animals every day no matter if I just feed them or play with my dog this book makes sense it's the best book take it from someone who never reads I have now read it every day since I got it two weeks ago I have not been able to stop reading I have read it probably 100 times since I got it highly recommend this book to any fan of his the only thing this book has about it is the end will make it clear that how everyone lost the great Steve Irwin it paints a picture of what happened to him at the end it will make you emotional if just like finding out what happened did nine years ago

I was looking for Urban Legend books for use in my classroom. I found many written by Brunvand at a good price, so I bought the lot without previewing his work. This was a mistake on my part because his books are very academic. I was looking for stories to inspire creative writing, but these are more informational than entertaining. I was disappointed, but at the same time I recognize the value of the book. The author goes through many stories, categorically, and debunks the myths. He generally gives short versions of common stories. It was educational, but not in the way I was hoping.

Very interesting book

Just ok

This is the fourth book in Jan Harold Brunvand's series on urban legends. It follows The Vanishing Hitchhiker,The Choking Doberman and The Mexican Pet. This book tells interesting, and mostly untrue stories that were circulating in the late eighties.Stories are organized into seven chapters which have the themes of "horrors," automobile legends, animal legends, accidents and mishaps, sex and scandals, business, professional and government legends, and academic legends.A few favorites:- A mother steams the stamp off of the envelope containing a letter from her prisoner-of-war son to find the message "They've cut off my hands!"- A woman sells her cheating husband's car for a dollar and sends him the money.- A dog follows a visitor into the house from the front yard and makes a mess of the place. It turns out the dog was a stray and each woman assumed it belonged to the other.- A woman feels bad about a funeral service with few attendees, so she signs the guest book. Later she receives a large sum of money designated in the deceased's will for "whomever attends my funeral."- There is supposedly an academic policy that a student will be given "straight A's" for the semester if his or her roommate commits suicide.As in previous volumes, the stories are entertaining and their debunking is instructive. The book does show it's age in that many of the stories seem no longer to be in circulation. For a more serious and methods-oriented discussion of urban legends and other folklore, see the most recent version of Brunvand's text, The Study of American Folklore: An Introduction.

Everyone has heard at least one of the legends presented in this book. While I hadn't heard of many of them, there were a couple that were familiar to me. The legend that was the most familiar to me was the one that states that if you are in college and your roommate commits suicide you will get an automatic 4.0 Grade Point Average for the year. There were others that I heard as jokes, and some that were presented as real.Jan Brunvand is a columnist who specializes in urban legends. He has put together a collection of legends in this book and he has organized them into several subject headings: Horrors, Automobile Legends, Animal Legends, Other Legends of Accidents and Mishaps, Sex and Scandal Legends, Business/Professional/and Government Legends, and Academic Legends. By far, my favorite section of the book was the one with the academic legends. I don't know if it was because I am still close enough in age to the college years that I still appreciate some of the legends and myths, but I found those to be the most entertaining.The format of each essay is that Brunvand identifies the legend, tells the main story of the legend, and then tries to trace the origins of the legend. Sometimes we find out that there is a true life story behind the legend, and it just got twisted in the retelling, and other times we simply learn that nothing like that ever happened, even though it feels like it could have. Naturally, some legends are more interesting than others. As a whole, this was a very interesting book and it exposed me to some urban legends that I'm sure to recognize when I hear them. This book is worth reading.

It appears that many of those who have reviewed this book misunderstood its purpose. It is not a "scary story" book; rather, it is a compilation of common urban legends and myths, complete with debunkings.I thought this book was vastly interesting and entertaining. If you're interested in whether some of the stories you've heard are true or not, or in how urban legends get altered as time goes on, you should definitely give it a read.

This is one of those books that are just plain fun to read. Almost everyone who picks up this book will be familiar with one or two of the tales presented, if not more. That was the greatest joy of reading this and Jan's other books.For those who enjoy well-known stories with ironic twists, pick this one up for those special campfire nights.

As a recovering sufferer of depression, anxiety, and PTSD, I found this book to be much more inspiring than any self help book on the shelves. I broke into tears reading the chapter on Abraham Lincoln. All of the things it said he did and went through I've felt many times. The things his wife felt seeing the mental torture he would endure on a daily basis reminded me of my ex. Such a great read and yet another reminder of how far we've come as a people.

Kalb paints a picture of how mental illness has influenced some of the greatest personalities in history. Topics explored: Did Lincoln suffer from depression? Was Einstein on the autistic spectrum? Did George Gershwin have ADHD? There's also a look at Marilyn Monroe, Princess Diana, and Betty Ford. Many aspects of the human psyche are explored including OCD, hoarding, and transgender.Each story discusses the historical surrounding of the celebrity's life, then Kalb makes her case for why that person had a mental health condition. Kalb gives the reader a fascinating look into what made some of history's most poignant characters tick.Kalb's writing style is easy to read and engages the reader. Her tone is genuine and sincere. How Andy Warhol hid his hoarding behavior was the story that surprised me the most. Betty Ford's story was the one that touched me the most as it's a struggle many can identify with.The book takes a psychological look at the unique people who have touched our lives. It's, fascinating, riveting, and engrossing. I highly recommend this book.

This is such an interesting analysis of several world famouus people who lived (and died) with varying stages of mental illness. It is written from the perspective of present day psychological research into such areas as depression, hypochondria, narcisstic behavior, borderline personality disorder, etc. A big question not really answered is what if each one had not been troubled, how different would their lives have been. I recommend this book to anyone interested in how behaviors beyond the "norm" effect lives.

I ordered this book after a year or two of thinking about the fine line between sanity and madness. I was fascinated by the stories of all these people and their successes despite their mental challenges. We are all part of the same human race!

This is a fascinating glimpse into the minds and disorders of a dozen notable personalities. Each chapter provides a concise biography of the subject, focusing on a unique personality trait that defined them. The chapters also delve into the background of the particular maladies and how they have been treated throughout history. Well written and fun to read, the book will peak interest in reading more about the individuals. I found some chapters more interesting than others but it depends on how much you have read about the particular person. I found the Marilyn Monroe chapter mundane but I had heard all of the information before. A very interesting read on how many of our celebrities (and most likely all of us) suffer from some sort of mental disorder to some degree or another. The issue is how we deal with it and maximize its strengths, and recognize and address its weaknesses. Read it straight through.

I enjoy reading medical books. It was interesting to read opinions on these 12 historical figures. This is not factual as these figures were not diagnosed in life but it’s interesting to hear that these people in their time may have had some of the mental health issues we have today.

A good read and was interesting to see the connections to the famous figures! It read more like a textbook but was not hard to read. Author made the topics easy to understand.
