John Owen was born in 1616 in Stadhampton, Oxfordshire and died in Ealing, West London, in 1683. If you only read the first two chapters of this book... YOU WILL BE BLOWN AWAY.This edition is really nice because the language is updated to modern English. This is the #1 book I give to friends. And I ask that they simply read chapters 1 and 2. This is good advice, because it seems quite doable to just read two small chapters. Seriously, if they would just read those two chapters, they would be saved from so much modern religious nonsense that goes on in churches. This book addresses many of the modern errors of Evangelicalism. It makes a solid case that Jesus is the antidote to the inventions of men who would create a Christless religion (and who would do so in the name of Christ -- yes, Owens predicts that too).Just read the first two chapters of this book, and you will be so pleased.

This is the best book I've ever read besides the Holy Scriptures. John Owen is not difficult to read...Don't settle for an abridged version, please. After you read 10-15 pages, you'll be used to the format. Plus, if he is a hard read for you, you'll only be testing and conditioning your mind by reading him ;that's just another benefit from reading older books! We're not talking about a different language here, it is still English. Read what he actually wrote, nothing less!

I know that John Owen's material in this book is outstanding. I have the same material already on my kindles. I purchased this book because it said it had 'real' page numbers. It doesn't. I have the Kindle Keyboard and The Kindle Paperwhite and two PCs with the app, and none of them show page numbers for this book. Enjoy the read, but don't expect page numbers. Opppps, I have now noticed that the page numbers are present on all my devices. The problem is that the page numbers begin at the start of Chapter 1. Enjoy both the read and having the page numbers.

I really enjoy this book.I thought that I knew something of the glory of Christ, but upon reading this, it showed me Mr. John Owen's remarkable gift of God in pulling Scripture into his bosom and projecting it through his own God given understanding for the world to profit by.This book will have you meditating on the Word of God and Christ's matchless and supreme glory, majesty and beauty all day long.

What a book! I love the Puritans especially John Owen. I want all of his books ...What insight into the WORD of GOD what's wonderful is they always use the WORD in their writings...not there own words but mostly Gods n then expound on it...

This is a very good treatment of this extremely important doctrine of the glory of Christ. It not only explains the matter, as it also motivates us to apprehend and live our lives with this glory in sight, not only in mind. Great reading and very timely for Christianity today.

To meditate on the person of Christ in all His glory will be beneficial to anyone who love the Christ of the Scriptures. Any book that can help us to see something of His glory is certainly worthy of our time and attention. John Owen was undoubtably one of the great Puritan theologians, and among the greatest theologians that the Church of Christ has ever had.Most would agree that Owens style of writing makes him much more difficult to read than some other prominent Puritans such as Thomas Watson,Jeremiah Burroughs,Richard Baxter and Thomas Manton.Since many find Owen so difficult to read hopefully the abridgements that R.J.K.Law has done will give some of John Owens more important works the wider audience which they so richly deserve. Owens 'Meditations on the Glory of Christ ' were first published a year after his death.John Owen being near death contemplated much on the Glory of his Saviour and these meditations are the fruit of those c9ontemplations at that time in his life.In the chapter 'Beholding the Glory of Christ by Faith and by Sight' Owen writes on p.102 " The actual sight of Christ is what all the saints of God desire in this life more than anything else-to depart to be with Christ(Phil.1:23);'to be absent from the body and present with the Lord'(2Cor.5:8).Those who do not long for this sight of Christ's glory as their highest joy are unspiritual and blind."When we contemplate the glory of Christ our minds soar from the things of earth and we are enabled to set our hearts on the things above.If your love for the Lord Jesus Christ is waning ,this is one of those rare books(that under God's blessing)can take that spark of love and fan it into a roaring flame.

I had read this before in the Collected Works, while traveling years ago. I enjoyed the layout of this edition with the translation of Latin, margins and headings. I found it a much more enjoyable read. I would have given both editions 5 stars just for content. I think this book is sorely needed to be read and reread today. A great source to strengthen our understanding of the person and work of Jesus Christ.

This gave me a lot of information that really lead me to no real scholarships. Seems I just receive a lot of advertisement now. Altho the book was inspirational and got me motivated to get scholarships. But I found more leads that panned out by asking the local colleges.

It's decent for the price. I'm sure there are better books out there on the subject, but it was inexpensive on Kindle, so, worth it.

Ok secrets, there are many out there that were not mentioned. The author really must renew his publication and update it. Maybe more parents would be interested in these hard times.

This book was recommended by Susie Orman. I found it to be a quick and easy read. It provides a number of statistical comparisons and suggestions of interest when applying for scholarships. It helped me organize my thoughts and clarified how much competition there is for the same dollars and how to best position myself. This book would be especially important for a high school senior but all students could benefit from it's teachings. I would recommend it.

My son will be a junior next year in high school and has ambitious plans to attend prestigious schools and become a doctor !!! Good for him but lot of money from me. Scholarships are one good way to offset costs. I was watching CNN program where the author was interviewed and appeared to be knowledgeable about many aspects of the scholarships.So went to Barnes and Nobles and found it to be too expensive. Bought the same here on Amazon for half the price.Book itself I was hoping will be an eye opener reg. some of the information for an parent that has been educated out of this country like me. Thus it is a challenge to be able to guide children.Though this books does give some pointers, I have found the material is largely contained in many of the guides that you get from colleges. Author directs readers to register on the on-line site he has and mostly this book concentrates in that aspect.I would give this book an "Okay" rating. If you are a total novice, then it makes for an interesting reading.

I was a little disappointed in this book because I thought it was going to be secrets and it was a lot of common sense things. Yes there were a few things I did not know but still not what I thought.

Great Book. Great ideas. Easy to comply with what the author is saying. I learned some new tips that I hadnt before.

I wish the book were larger with examples of essays, etc. Good advice given for where to look for scholarships.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book! After living in Japan for two years, I have been craving some of the traditional menu items that are difficult to find in the states. Most cookbooks I've found are very Americanized, however, and don't offer very authentic choices.This book is a nice blend between traditional Japanese and Western adaptations. It contains instructions for how to make sushi rolls common in American restaurants, but also includes dishes such as "oden" that are popular in Japan but rare in the U.S. If you can find the ingredients, the recipes are definitely worth it!My only complaint is the lack of pictures. I like to have a better idea of what I'm cooking, especially when it is an unfamiliar dish.

Many recipes, great explanations and good glossary. However - no pictures! Or more accurately, one picture every 30 or so pages on average. This is a huge problem for me as I find it very useful to have pictures of what the dish is supposed to look like.

This is a good book. A useful introduction to Japanese cuisine and culture behind the cuisine. I was I was disappointed in the quality of the pictures. I have some Japanese cook books that have beautiful pictures that not only capture the cuisine but the history and culture. Beautiful photos along with a beautifully written book not only teach but take you to that part of the world through writing, recipes and pictures! Although for me it fell short there. The Information in the book is of great learning! Also the seller I am very happy with! I had a big order when I ordered this book and I accidentally ordered 3 instead of one. I filled out the return page and had a response of approval for return of 2 of the books within minutes!

It also talks about how Japanese cooking encompasses the five senses and the five tastes. Filled with tips on how to adapt Japanese cooking for a western kitchen, the book contains recipes for everything from rice to sushi and beyond, such as how to put together a bento box. The subtitle describes how to make ramen, bento, sushi and more. But Japanese cooking goes beyond simple tastebud action. The book describes the need for simplicity and beauty in the presentation of meals as well, such as the plates you could use. The book is a comprehensive, interesting read about the basics of Japanese cooking. Very enjoyable.

There are a few things to remember in making it: be sure to cut your vegetable of choice (sweet potato, squash, etc.) evenly the same size; dry and lightly flour cut pieces before placing in in cold, lumpy batter; fry at a consistent temperature; finally, clean cooking oil of left over batter.Japanese dishes use much of the same vegetables, fruits, proteins, and condiments like western meals. Many of their dishes are cooked over a stove, grill or broiler and can be quickly prepared. Yes, you can even have cold Somen noodles with dipping sauce contrary to traditional western Ramen noodles with a pack of seasoning.It has many ways to cook rice, sushi, and the Japanese version of sweets (fruits, nuts, and Green Tea Ice Cream). Highly Reccomended for the Japanese food lover.

I love Asian cuisine, especially Japanese, and this cookbook arrived yesterday--worth the wait! It starts with a discussion on Japanese food, including aesthetics, and then goes through the basics: kitchenware, ingredients, and techniques, with recipes/chapters organized by major food categories (flavorings, rice, soup, noodles, salads, etc.) There's even a chapter on Bento Boxes! Recipes are easy to follow but also very elegant--and delicious. This book does exactly what the title says. If you are a fan of Japanese food and want to try it at home, this is a great choice. A note about this being a hardback book: it feels good to hold and looks great on the cookbook shelf!

This is a great book for fledgling cooks, lovers of Japanese cuisine, and anyone who is looking to branch out from their culinary comfort zone. I made the Udon with Eggs and Shrimp (instead of fish cake) for dinner tonight, and it was easy, filling, and fun to cook. I’m inspired!One of my biggest pet peeves with cookbooks that cover a particular culture’s cuisine, be it Greek, Turkish, Thai, or Indian, is that the writers of the cookbooks make the cuisine too “precious”, for lack of a better word. There’s a huge emphasis placed on historical accuracy to the point of overkill, and lists of necessary cooking implements and ingredients go on for pages and pages. This book is different - it manages to be both accurate and straightforward. As other review writers have noted, there’s an awesome summary of how Japanese food has evolved over time, and the book helpfully separates ingredients and cooking implements that are necessary for recipes from those that are just helpful to have around. *I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Japanese Cooking Made Simple is a delightful cookbook.I love cookbooks. My favorite cookbooks are ones that give information about the culture and heritage of the food. This cookbook offers that and more. I was so pleased to get the lists of tools that are needed and why. And possible substitutions.Most of the recipes seem easy to follow, but it’s hard to find the ingredients in our small town. Also, I saw a couple of small typos, like asking you to cut 18-inch thick butternut squash slices when you’re making tempura.I love sushi and I’ve wanted to learn to make some simple rolls. The pictures in this book are detailed and easy to follow. I’m excited to finally have the resources to make Japanese food at home.

Octavio Paz (1914-1998) was born in Mexico City. He wrote many volumes of poetry, as well as a prolific body of remarkable works of nonfiction on subjects as varied as poetics, literary and art criticism, politics, culture, and Mexican history. He was awarded the Jerusalem Prize in 1977, the Cervantes Prize in 1981, and the Neustadt Prize in 1982. How do I measure the value of a book? For someone like me that is like asking how do you measure the value of Love!First of all I have been a huge fan of Spanish Language poets, especially Neruda, Vallejo and Lorca for years, and cannot believe that I have missed Paz along the way. The name was familiar but had not read his work. Can't even recall now how I came across him recently, read a few things I found online and it struck a chord with me immediately. And when I began to research his books this one stood out. In short, it is far better than I expected. The work of Paz resonates so deeply with me and I suppose as a writer one of the ways I do "measure" the value of a book is when it inspires me to write, and this book has given me much inspiration. I always get bilingual editions- I read Spanish, French and Italian now to a lesser degree, which is a bit strange because I am Italian but only started to learn to language a couple of years ago. I lived in Mexico for a year and spoke it as often as I could, but I haven't done so in many years so I do not speak it very well anymore, but read it fairly well, the same with French. There are several French writers, poets in particular, that equally move me, in one way or another, and most are from the early 20th Century, although I have come across a couple who are still writing today. But I suppose with "Spanish" poets, wherever they are from, I am moved in a much different way. It comes down to levels of passion in the art that Lorca called "duende". I can't put this tome down. In a short time, Paz has become one of my favorite poets. And this book has become a cherished addition to my library. I have been writing poetry for about 45 years; I grew up with the Beats, and those poets who were their influences and poets who they influenced of my generation. Over the years I have been drawn more to French and Spanish writers mostly of the early 20th century, although Paz wrote a bit later. I am intrigued with Paz's style and imagery. Like Lorca he can 'astonish' with just a few lines of verse. The way in which he strings words, phrases together is magical. His passion hit me in such a deep place. I found him in a time of my life when I needed to. This has usually been the case. I have published two novels and a collection of selected poetry that spans 40+ years of my life. I believe that great writers are born, most of the real greats seem like they have existed on some other plane. And I know how important great writers have been to me as both a read and a writer. Several of my favorite Spanish language writers truly capture the essence and nuance of "darkness and light", and Paz is one of the best. It is hard for me to compare, for example, to Neruda or Lorca because I have been reading them for so long, but it is very rare for any poet to totally engage me so quickly. This collection is excellent, the translations are very good, an art in itself. I highly recommend this book to any one who already knows of Paz, and to anyone that appreciates truly great writing.

Extremely dense collection of poems, but I enjoy every second. I prefer the Spanish version of each poem, but because I am a bad bilingual, I do have to glance at the translations here and there, which I find to be done well. The diction is appropriate. I had to order this for class, but it isn’t exclusive for the classroom. It’d be a great collection to own for recreation.

The translations are illuminating and educational due to the consistently excellent choices made.

This is an excellent edition of the collected poems of Octavio Paz, with English translations facing the Spanish originals. I purchased this as a gift for my Spanish teacher and she was delighted! My favorites are his poems written when he served as a Mexican diplomat in India and Japan. His sensitive mind absorbed the nuances of place and religion, which are recreated for us in the poems. His efforts at haiku en espagnol are enlightening, pun intended.

I bought this book after reading an excerpt of one of Paz's poems at a camp. I didn't know what poem it was from, so I bought the book and scoured it until I found the poem. It was Brotherhood. The poetry is beautiful and moving. It is the type of poetry you can read and enjoy no matter if you understand what it is saying, the writing is that beautiful
