The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity, and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary, by Simon Winchester

Review

"I found "The Professor and the Madman both enthralling and moving, in its brilliant reconstruction of a most improbable event: the major contributions made to the great Oxford English Dictionary by a deeply delusional, incarcerated "madman, " and the development of a true friendship between him and the editor of the OED. One sees here the redemptive potential of work and love in even the most deeply, "hopelessly, " psychotic."-- Oliver Sacks, M.D."Remarkably readable, this chronicle of lexicography roams from the great dictionary itself to hidden nooks in the human psyche that sometimes house the motives for murder, the sources for sanity, and the blueprint for creativity."-- "Kirkus Reviews" (starred)"An extraordinary tale, and Simon Winchester could not have told it better. . . . [He] has written a splendid book."-- "The Economist""Madness, violence, arcane obsessions, weird learning, ghastly comedy, all set out in an atmosphere of po-aced, high neo-Gothic. The geographical span is wide, from Dickensian London to Florida's Pensacola Bay, from the beaches at Trincomalee to the Civil War battlefields of the United States. . . . It is a wonderful story."-- John Banville, "Literary Review""This is almost my favorite kind of book: the work of social and intellectual history which through the oblique treatment of major developments manages to throw unusual light on humankind and its doings. . . . Simon Winchester's effortlessly clear, spare prose is the perfect vehicle for the tale . . . absolutely riveting."-- Will Self, "The Times" (London)"It's a story for readers who know the joy of words and can appreciate side trips through the history of dictionaries and marvel at the idea that whenShakespeare wrote, there we no dictionaries to consult.... Winchester, a British Journalist who's written 12 other books, combines a reporter's eye for detail with a historian's sense of scale. His writing is droll and eloquent"--Bob Minzesheimer, "USA Today"Winchester's history of the OED is brisk and entertaining"--Mark Rozzo, "Washington Post Book World""The Professor and the Madman...is the linguistic detective story of the decade.... Winchester does a superb job of historical research that should entice readers even more interested in deeds than words."--William Safire, "New York Times Magazine"elegant and scrupulous"--David Walton, "New York Times Book Review"Winchester has written a powerful account of the shifting foundations on which meaning is built, and the impoverishment of a language that could not describe or give peace to one of its makers."-- Lithe Sebesta, "New York Post"Mr. Winchester deftly weaves...a narrative full of suspense, pathos and humor.... In this elegant book the writer has created a vivid parable, in the spirit of Nabokov and Borges. There is much truth to be drawn from it, about Victorian pride, the relation between language and the world, and the fine line between sanity and madness."--Daniel Mark Epstein, "Wall Street Journal "a fascinating, spicy, learned tale"-- Richard Bernstein, "New York Times"Simon Winchester, in his splendid, oddball slice of history "The Professor and the Madman, has come up with an irresistible hook... [an] utterly fascinating account of how a combination of scholarship and nationalism begat what would become the "Oxford English Dictionary... If the initial sections of [Winchester's] tale have the appeal of a gaslight Victorianthriller, Winchester doesn't leave it at that. He's a superb historian because he's a superb storyteller.... The strange richness of it all is enhanced by the flawless clarity of Winchester's prose. Winchester, investigating an odd bit of background trivia about the making of one of the world's great books, has the courage of his own curiosity. The elegant curio he has created is as enthralling as a good story can be and as informative as any history aspires to be."--Charles Taylor, "Salon "One of the great strengths of this book is historical mise-en-scene, particularly for nineteenth-century America and England...[a] marvelous work of historical and philogical imagination."-- Linda Bridges, "National Review

Dr. W. C. Minor, whose story is at the center of Simon Winchester's The Professor and The Madman, is "crazy". From the symptoms that are described in the book, he would most likely today be classified as a paranoid schizophrenic. An intelligent and sophisticated man, he was a surgeon and a member of the Union Army during the Civil War before he moved to the UK and his delusions of being tormented in his sleep led him to fatally shoot an innocent man. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity and committed to a British asylum for most of the rest of his life. But he didn't stop being an educated man solely by virtue of his condition, and with his endless spare time he got himself involved in a one-of-a-kind project: the Oxford English Dictionary.Winchester weaves together the tale of Dr. Minor and the history of dictionaries leading up to the creation of the OED. English is a language quite different than many of the other European ones in the way it has grown explosively and liberally borrowed from others, and for quite a long time there was no real attempt to catalog it: a few volumes that sought to define the most unusual words existed, but an actual dictionary of ALL the words with ALL their meanings didn't really happen until the OED. It took decades of work and thousands of volunteers to develop the dictionary, and Minor's contribution thereto was significant indeed...enough to merit a dedication in the finished product even.Dr. Minor was seriously ill and a criminal at that, but we should know by now that these things do not per se mean that someone is incapable of being a productive member of society. That being said, there is a shock value there: we don't usually think of murderers as the kind of people who wind up knee-deep in dictionary development. Winchester chooses to emphasize Minor's humanity rather than sensationalize his crime, taking us through his life as the son of missionaries in Sri Lanka (there's an odd bit of colonialism where Winchester is weirdly attached to the British name of Ceylon) through the horrors he would have seen as a medical professional in the Civil War and his subsequent mental decline, leading down to his crime and its punishment, and then wrapping up with his long years in institutional care. Even though because of the time in history, that care consisted mostly of a relatively gentle confinement rather than actual treatment, it still should be enough to remind us that there are probably plenty of people in jail or psychiatric hospitals today who do have something to offer the world. The book itself is solid but not really exceptional in any way. It's an interesting story and well-told, but it wasn't an especially memorable or special read. For non-fiction readers or people interested in dictionary development, it's definitely a good choice, but I don't know that I'd recommend going out of one's way to read it if this sort of thing doesn't usually do it for you.

I love books that take a minor detail from history, research the heck out of it, and find an interesting story in the process. I would like to research and write a book like that. I was loving this book until the final chapter. At that point the author got a bit preachy and worse yet, included some misinformation about prevalence and etiology of psychiatric disorders. But first the story, which is fascinating! This book is about the making of the Oxford English Dictionary. Have you ever thought about how difficult it would be to compile a list of words, their origins, definitions, and literary quotes to support the definition in the era before computers? I cannot believe that dictionaries were printed under those conditions! The book does a wonderful job of explaining the arduous task of making a dictionary. Numerous volunteers were recruited to find words in literature and support the definitions. The author includes a brief history of the dictionaries that came before the OED. The story really focuses on James Murray and his work organizing the dictionary. It also focuses on one of the volunteers, Dr. W. C. Minor. He was a civil war physician who witnessed terrible things and lost his mind. He murdered a man while he was in a delusional state. He was placed in Broadmoor Asylum for the Criminally Insane for a number of years and eventually transferred to St. Elizabeth’s in Washington D. C. While at Broadmoor he volunteered to his time to compile words for the dictionary and was one of the more prodigious contributors. He and Professor Murray had a long scholarly correspondence, eventually meeting at Broadmoor and becoming friends. This is a very interesting story and certainly gives you an appreciation for dictionaries and the people who create them. I was really enjoying this book until the end. The author goes on for several pages about the injustice to the man murdered by Dr. Minor, who in effect has been lost to history. Valid point, but in my opinion the author was straying from the purpose of his book. My larger concern is with some inaccuracies about mental illness. He talks about PTSD not being recognized until the Gulf War (1990-91). However, the diagnosis was listed in the DSM in 1980. And of course “Shell Shocked” from WWI was a precursor to our current definition of PTSD. This may have been an ambiguously expressed idea rather than an actual error. I also disagree with his statement about lack of advances in medical treatment of schizophrenia and our knowledge of the etiology. Since clinical psychology is my field of study and my career some of these inaccuracies were glaring and spoiled an otherwise interesting and well-written book. This may be a small point. I do hope that these were editorial rather than research errors. For those of you who stuck with my soapbox rant, thank you for reading!

An absolutely fascinating account of the origins of the largest lexical enterprise in history, the Oxford English Dictionary, as well as the men who initiated it and worked on it.Among the latter, the most interesting was William Minor. An American and a doctor by training, he served in the US Army during the last years of the Civil War when he went through, and participated in, some gruesome events indeed. These events may or may not have triggered his paranoia which caused him to murder an innocent laborer in London, where he moved after the war's end. Whereupon he was judged insane and committed to an asylum for life. It was from his cell, in reality two comfortable rooms, that he made a vast contribution to the Dictionary. The weakest part of the book comes towards the end, There Winchester, speculates--speculates is the right word--about what may have caused MInor's paranoia and mental illness. Comparing the symptoms to those of PTSD, he claims that the latter was first identified during the 1991 Gulf War! A pity, for I would gladly have given his book five stars.

A great deal of history and factual information is jam packed into nearly 500 pages. Rothbard factually shows the impact of wars on national debt, how the rich/banks absorb that debt, and how they manipulate our leadership with a iron fist. Reading about the leading up to the US great depression is scary as it is forshadoing so much of whats happening now.Reading this book is essential to understanding politics, history, war, economics, the stock market, and all things that politically envelope our life. Anyone who pays taxes, can't claim they don't have a reason to care. Thats just sheer ignorance

I was drawn into Rothbard's work through a recommended reading list from "Becoming Your Own Banker" by Nelson Nash. If you're not familiar with Rothbard, the guy did not like banking institutions or government taxation, and this book provides a very detailed historical timeline of those institutions and key figures in the movement that you've probably never heard before. He also sheds light on some very important meetings and political action which established our current income tax system and the Federal Reserve as we know it today. This was a long read, but very informative if you're interested in the history of banking institutions and early political tactics during the Industrial Age.

This excellent history provides the real story of what money is and what banking systems do with it. Refutes the claims of the 'chartalists' who promote Modern Money Theory. Good to read along with von Mises- The Theory of Money and Credit - Charles Calomiris - Fragile by Design - Felix martin - Money - and Geoffrey Ingham - The Nature of Money - and George Selgin - Money Free and Unfree Good addition to the larger library of Murray Rothbard titles - But one would like more on the history of the 18th and 19th centuries - even so the account of the 20th century is excellent.

So very interesting. I noticed how the economic situations around all the US history is sort of glossed over or forgotten entirely. Now I'm seeing different motivations for all the wars we've engaged in including the Revolutionary war. A must add for homeschoolers as typical US history is inadequate.

What an eye-opening book! The particular strenth of this volume as opposed to others is Rothbard's insight as into the role of academic societies and scholars in the forming of the Fed in the 20th century - though that doesn't occupy the bulk, of course. The narrative is lucid and clear, as with most of Rothbard's works, and has an excellent history of central banking in the 1800s, and shows the peril of fractional reserve banking on the American economy for over a century prior to the Fed (1913).

This is one fantastic look behind the economic curtains. Rothbard obviously spent a great effort diving into the facts (supported by pages of thoughtful stats, not just numbers)to try to break down the "history" of financial calamities that scarred our nation. After reading this book you will understand the set ups for three of the most interesting debt explosions of our history. Rothbard investigates the American Revolution and the start of the first national bank, the explosion of debt after the Civil War and also the growth of deficits after FDR's presidential changes to society. In all, this book simply is an amazing and honest look at the way the country has been a puppet to many different characters over the ages and if Rothbard was to see what is happening today, he would roll in his grave.

Although this is a technically written book, the narrative it produces reads as well as any thriller, proving again that fact is far more interesting than fiction. As many times as I have told my children about "how much more that thing costs than when I was a kid", I can now replace that saying with "how much less my money is worth than when I was a kid." The missing lynchpin in my wide study of American History was here within this book: that moneyed interests has always aligned themselves with government, and the two have conspired to "rob" the common citizen through monetary inflation and devaluation of the currency. You can pick any period of American history, and overlay the currency / credit / monetary factors over our current time, and not be able to tell the difference. More than any book I have read, this explains the current loss of personal liberty in our country.

This is an important read if you want to start to understand how monetary policy is made in our nation's capitol. It is the only non-fiction financial history book that looks at the motivations behind decisions. And it is surprising how relevant it still is today. Unfortunately the read is a little dry. I gave it 4 stars because the information is important and it is a good remedy for insomnia.

This was a fascinating book which provided a great deal of insight into not only Rosemary Kennedy's story, but the story of mental retardation and how society dealt with it at the time. It's amazing to see how much shame having a child like Rosemary brought to a family, and even more amazing is how little resources were available at the time to help manage children like her. Perhaps the most eye-opening thing I learned from this book was the depth of how the Kennedy family pushed the disability movement forward because of Rosemary. This may be something that others knew, but it was news to me and it gives me a different opinion of the family. I was especially moved by how much Eunice Kennedy Shriver did to forward the cause, including her work with the Special Olympics. At the risk of repeating myself, I was also fascinated by the fact that no one is able to see the actual records of Rosemary's lobotomy. There is a notation in the book that the records are sealed indefinitely for privacy reasons, but I think it could be very instructive if we could learn just what went on with the surgery so we could learn from it. One thing I would say that this shows us is that we need to be careful before allowing medical procedures and other treatments to become mainstream prior to effective testing and an appreciation for the potential deleterious effects they may have. It may have seemed that a lobotomy for someone like Rosemary was the right thing to do at the time, but if more time had passed, it would have become more apparent that this type of procedure was ineffective, if not barbaric. This book is a quick read which is very interesting. I would highly recommend it.

Rosemary's story is truly heartbreaking; at many turns her sad fate could have been prevented, but because of the way things were at the time the people in her life didn't know any better. The circumstances of her birth shocked me; I had never ever heard of that practice before and I actually had to put the book down and digest that for a few hours before I picked it up again. Once I got past that initial shock, I could not put the book down. It is so well researched and well written. Not only does it tell Rosemary's story, but has so much information about the early 1900's that I found absolutely fascinating; special education of the time, women's role in society, politics, psychology of the time...the author was so knowledgeable and writes so well that it draws you in and reads like fast paced fiction. She uses personal letters and diaries from Kennedy family members and friends to really give the reader an insight into why things happened the way that they did. It really makes you think about decisions, who in our lives we let influence our decisions, and how those decisions affect our children and our children's children. I absolutely loved this book and will certainly be looking for other things by this author.

The opening chapters of this book will give you nightmares regarding childbirth at the beginning of the last century. And it is hard to put myself in the shoes of the Kennedy parents when I have grown up in this era. It's hard to grasp, through a modern lens, how little was understood about Rosemary's problems. Even so, Joe and Rose Kennedy come off as more concerned with the perception, by the world, of the Kennedy reputation than in Rosemary herself. She is constantly forced beyond her capabilities, or managed in ways to minimize others' abilities to understand how challenged she really was. The expectation is that she will be "cured" by some new therapy, or suddenly catch up academically, as she is moved from one facility to the next and endures a series of doctors. That alone speaks to the perception that she is unacceptable as she is. Here is where it is, on the surface, evident that Rose in particular spent a great deal of energy trying to help Rosemary, but you come away with the feeling it is not out of undying love for her daughter, but more that she is desperate to get Rosemary fixed, to not have to deal with a different child. They live in a world where having an unusual child could pose problems for the remaining children as far as finding suitable mates -- the bloodline is seen to be tainted. Brain damage and Rosemary's inability to keep up with her siblings is heartbreaking. The results of the ignorance of the time as to how all this happened, and how to deal with it, is difficult to read without feeling judgmental by today's standards. The Kennedy siblings seem far more accepting of their sister than her parents. Kate Larson implies that the paths of Rosemary's siblings were deeply influenced by the experience of having a challenged sister.

This box set is a must have for the G. Bailey fan. As always Gem creates a world that immerses you in a world that is addictive and consuming, Always needing to know what happens next, with revelations, danger, love and just a plain old good time. In the Wings of Ice and Fire collection we get Isola Dragonice, who is a fun character who fights for what she believe in, and the her loves. I always enjoy a good fiercely loyal female lead. Also the cameos of crossover characters from other series is always fun, and a neat way to catch up on the characters you know and love. If your a G. Bailey fan, this is a must. If your a Paranormal Rh fan, this set is a must read. Overall if your a good book fan, this series is for you.

Protected by Dragons is an amazing series following Princess Isola as she sets out to save her people from the ultimate evil, and falls in love with her dragon guards along the way. This series is full of action, adventure, and lots of romance! G Bailey is a talented author who not only created Isola's amazing story but also introduced these characters to Winter and her mates, effortlessly merging these storylines with familiar characters, enemies, and plots. This boxset brings the entire series together and even includes some great bonus content giving us looks at Isola and her child's future! Can't wait to read future books in the Winter/Isola worlds!

I love this series of books so much! Isola Dragonice goes through so much, but she is a strong and determined person who will fight for what she needs or wants. The world that G Bailey has created is fascinating and addictive. Once I started reading, it was difficult for me to put it down. I love the cross overs from characters from a different beloved series, as it is always nice to see a different side of characters that you already enjoy. If you like shifters, great stories, and steamy encounters, this is the series for you.

This is one of my fav series of G and I’m so psyched to see it in a box set. This series is amazing. It’s filled with so much excitement, drama, love, betrayal, and hot men. Who doesn’t love hot me? It also has characters from other books that G has written * hint, hint* Winters Guardian. You will love this series and if you’re anything like me with the whole box set at your disposal you won’t leave your couch for days. Yes G books will do that to you. Trust me when I say you won’t regret buying this book.

We now have a book set that is titled Wings of Ice and Fire Collection which has all books 1-5 in Protected by Dragons series plus in the Wings of Ice and Fire Collection there are 2 bonus scenes & a blurb of a spin-off of the spin-off. (It started with a series called Her Guardians which follows Winter & her guys, which then turned into 2 spin-offs of Her Fate & Protected by Dragons, and now we will get another spin-off that's yet to be named.) Wow, just wow.

I love this series! Isola goes through a lot throughout the books but she never backs down from what's important to her. This series has a ton of action and moves at a brisk pace. It also has crossover to Bailey's Winter series set in the same world. I highly recommend getting the box set just for the exclusive bonus scenes. They give a nice teaser for the spin off series and I can't wait for it!

Wow. I had not read this story before it came out in a box set. I’m so glad I waited. It was awesome not having to search for the next book and it being a page turn away. The story is well thought out. It doesn’t drag on and is fast paced. I love the characters. They all had their own personality which is great to have in a book. I look forward to reading more from the spin offs!

This is an amazing boxset! This is one of my all time favorite series from G. Bailey and I love that everything was put together like this.. PLUS there is bonus content at the end. So even if you have read this series you should still check this out for the bonus stuff! Seriously it's worth it!I received this book from the author.
