I have been reading the Best American Sports Writing series since the late 1990s. I preorder it every year with great anticipation, and always seem to get through it so fast that I have to consciously slow down to enjoy it more. It pains me, therefore, to write such a poor review for this latest edition. I found the selection of stories to be depressing and even repetitive-- stories of brain trauma, shattered dreams, early deaths, dark social issues, and painful narratives of athletes broken and down. I don't mind the increased focus on social issues in the last 10 or so years of this series, and think the addition of these stories balances out the mindless treatment of sports on most platforms, but would like to have a better balance of stories that make you also want to embrace what sports have to offer this society. I do not see myself re-reading stories as I always have done with past editions and hope future editions can provide a more heterogenous selection of stories. The bright spot of this edition was series editor Glenn Stout's forward to the book, which was very insightful and interesting, followed by the introduction by the author, Jeff Pearlman. I just wish the selected stories followed suit.

I have a copy of every volume in this series, all the way back to the first one from 1991, and I have never read a more depressing collection of articles. It seems as if the guest editor was trying to make sure that readers shared his obvious hatred of all thing sporting (ironic, since he is a sportswriter). We have 1) multiple articles on concussions in football 2) a high school football player who died on the field from a cause that is most likely not related to football, but football is blamed anyway 3) two articles on women who are obsessed with running, to a degree where it is possible it has taken over their lives and even may have ruined their relationships 4) a long and detailed article on the funeral preparations for Muhammad Ali (including far too much on the embalming process) and 5) a long anti-NFL screed, tying in politics, protests and patriotism, all from a single perspective.Of course, what modern sports writing collection would be complete without multiple anti-Trump articles, the height of current sports writing.Very few of the articles included celebrate sports in any way. Almost the only positive story was Steve Rushin's love letter to his wife.In the preface, the series editor mentioned that of the 25 articles in this collection, 15 were included, not from the list from the series editor, but included at the request of the guest editor. If fact, for the first time I can recall, the series editor specifically encouraged readers to seek out and read articles listed in the Notable Sports Writing of 2017 appendix.Hopefully, next year's edition will be back to the previous standards.

The strength or weakness of this series falls on the guest editor. I have nearly every book since 1991, they've had some odd choices for editor -- novelists and writers, who didn't write sports, and only one woman picked, and so forth. I was excited when Jeff Pearlman was selected as guest editor as he's one of the best sports writers/authors out there today.I particularly enjoyed the story on the minor league baseball player. Minor leaguers are infinitely more interesting than their MLB giant ego counterparts. Not a Pat Riley fan per se, not a hater either, but I liked the long read on him and his obsession with coaching and being a G.M. The Jimmy Butler article was very fascinating, and again, I'm not a big Butler fan, but the guy is interesting. There are a lot of good reads in this edition.Here's what's keeping it from being a 5-star book: Pearlman himself needed to be edited, perhaps by the series editor or someone else. Question 1: Why are you picking so many CTE/Death stories? I know it's a hot topic, but you're overdoing it. The two running stories were somewhat repetitive. Death, death, and more death. I'm stunned a guy as smart as Pearlman didn't see the pattern here, and neither did his editors ... that is if he had any.I loved Pearlman's introduction about great writing, though I grossly disagree with what he thought was the best lede of all time from his collegiate newspaper. That was just a 'bro-hug from college, not great writing. That said, Pearlman is right about making the reader think. Editors need to think, too. At least they're not handing us a diet of fishing and rock climbing stories like they did for about a decade.This is still a great series and I'll buy next year's book. Here's a suggestion for editor: Sally Jenkins.

I really enjoyed reading “The Best American Sports Writing of 2018.” I’ve read many of the other of these anthologies over the years and I’ve enjoyed all of them. As some of the reviews have pointed out this is not your usual bunch of sports stories. Did you just want some pieces of some star of the year in baseball or football or whatever then this year’s collection is not your cup of tea. But if you love what sports is all about , including it’s darker sides then I highly recommend this. These stories feel more like America today . From the burial of Muhammad Ali, written with an amazing eye to detail, to a short beautifully written piece called Still Running, along with the incredible darkside of football piece,”The Concussion Diaries” and the heartbreaking true dovetail of the intersection of youth soccer and a mass shooting, “Cheers from a soccer field far from Las Vegas”, These are pieces that reflect where we are in America right now with sports .They have been selected with great care as the forward describes. Give this a shot. if you’ve read this far, you’ll probably like thiscollection.

I have EVERY issue of this series. I could not disagree with the other reviews more. I found this to be one of the best editions, if not the best. Yes, several (but by no means all, or even most) of the stories are sad and in some cases tragic. The editor, Jeff Pearlman, wrote in his introductions that he prefers stories where the reader has to work, thinking about what the author writes. I do too.

More like a coffee-table book with useful advice, at times printed in white & light colored print, that is overwhelmed by beautiful photos. Lack of research evidence-based cites makes it hard to distinguish from that & the author’s experience & opinion. The book does credit the book by John Medina (which is an excellent book). The useful information for new parents could be condensed into 1/3 if books size. An index would be most helpful for new parents. The book successfully expresses the love & awe of raising young children in photos & advice. My opinion is the photos & information overwhelm each other making it hard to use as a parenting reference. I am keeping the book for new parents to look through. Three stars for beautiful photography & excellent advice. I was expecting more practicalinformation for parents. The book just needs a less expensive format. I appreciated their passion & love of raising young children that shows through their work.

This is such a wonderful parenting resource, and I appreciate that it begins with pregnancy, because parenting truly does begin before your baby is even born! As a mom of two young boys, I found it full of useful, valuable information, and also an enjoyment to read. Finding time to read can be tricky, but the format of this book is practical for those with just few minutes to spare here and there. I also think it's the perfect "coffee table" book for parents. Our friends will browse through it when visiting, and they'll learn great parenting tips in just a few minutes of flipping through and reading random pages.Even though I'm no longer a new mom, I still find myself turning to Zero to Five as a resource. No two siblings are the same, and while my four-year-old son doesn't have a violent bone in his body, his almost two-year-old brother is the king of hitting, throwing, pushing, and more. It's been helpful to revisit the discipline section and implement the information and tips shared!I gave a copy to my sister-in-law when she had her first baby, and she and her husband love that it contains both science based facts, but is also full of personal parenting stories. I agree- I find myself relating to the parenting stories shared throughout the book. As someone who loves pregnancy and parenting books, articles, and blogs, when I finished this book I found myself wanting more. I now follow Zero to Five on Facebook, and I enjoy reading the articles and information posted.

This book is not only set in firm, researched science and written in a way that makes it all clear and possible, it's truly comforting! Tracy Cutchlow's writing style makes you feel like you're having a cup of coffee with the best friend you can imagine: someone who gets you, believes in you, and has a great sense of humor. She's encouraging and understanding. You can tell that Cutchlow has been there. And she doesn't act as if the information in this book will make everything perfect in your life. She regularly audits how much of a struggle this parenting thing is. But she also gives you so much hope and such practical tips, all in a format that's super easy to access and read. My only wish is for a super-easy-to access index so when my toddler won't, say, stop biting me, I can easily find a section about that.

This is a must have book for parents and has become my favorite baby shower gift. The spiral binding allows you to leave the book open on the couch next to you while you pump/nurse/handle baby. The information is succinct and incredibly helpful. I love this so much that I bought it for my daughter's daycare provider (who has a Masters in early childhood education and also loved it!) Cannot recommend this book enough!

We've really enjoyed reading portions of this book. We read Brain Rules for Babies by John Medina (loved it!), and saw the ad for this book at the back of the book. Since Medina's book didn't give a lot of specific, practical ways to go about applying the principles he talked about, we were excited to see what Zero to Five had to offer. The book has some great visuals, including pictures of babies, infants, and kids, and the book is neatly divided into main categories. There is also a small numbering system on the up right section of the pages that tells you the appropriate age to use the tips being talked about on the page. For example, one page might list 0,1, 2, meaning the tip works from infancy up to 2 years old. We've been reading portions of the book, but we've in no way read the whole thing (see below). Another plus about the book is that it is really easy to keep open, read, and turn the pages if it's sitting on a table while you're holding the little one.The reason we're giving the book 4-stars instead of 5-stars is because we've found it hard to get through and to immediately use. It's not necessarily designed as a book to read cover-to-cover, which is fine. However, it took awhile to figure out which passages were appropriate for our infant. About the 5th time I picked the book up, I started noticing the little numbers I described above, and then it all made sense. It turns out there's a small picture on page 1 that explains the numbering system, but we missed it. We read the opening passages, but the little numbers and the small writing with the arrow pointing to the numbers didn't jump out at us until we combed through the book trying to figure out where we might've missed the explanation. All in all, the tips for "0" so far have been great, but finding them was a treasure hunt that became more frustrating than anything else as we were trying to find the pages with a "0" between quiet spells. Now that DD is sleeping more, we have a little more time to comb through the book, but for some reason it feels like an undertaking to do so and so it mostly sits on our coffee table until we get inspired to find out more.All in all, we're really grateful this book exists and that we have it, and we expect it to be useful for years to come as DD grows. We''re also appreciative that Tracy Cutchlow was able to work with John Medina, get inspired, and share the insights she gained. If you're thinking about getting this book, buy it! If you're thinking a friend or relative who just had a kid might benefit from this book, know that they will. Even if you only gain benefit from one of the 70 tips, your child will be better off for it.

Riveting speculation....this book being based on fact was hard to put down. Falconer did a great job piecing historical facts together with speculation on the why and how. The harem is as political a social pod as any congressional chamber and this book is a great read....except for the fact that Falconer publishes his books prior to editing for typos and grammatical errors. This is the third book I've read by him and the one thing that sets him apart from other authors is the lack of editing. It it poorly done on his part, making it extremely difficult to understand what he's trying to say at times...too many times...it's exasperating, frustrating and makes you want to throw the book across the room...or your Kindle or iphone in my case. What's worse, Falconer can write and actually does historical research and travels the globe. So I was already totally committed to reading the book within the first few chapters. Therein lies the dichotomy! Was I too frustrated by the gross negligence of this author to publish a first draft of a spectacular novel based on fact to stop reading its repeated sentences and incorrect pronoun placement (just to list a few of the numerous errors I was forced to wade through), or do I trudge on because the book is so damned enthralling I have to finish it, sleepless night or not? Of course, I did the latter....and I'm glad I did! It's great movie stuff...and mostly true! The Russian kadin is a class I bitch...hateful, spiteful and deadly as hell. We are in a US presidential election year much if the electorate worry the female candidate is not strong enough to take decisive action to protect us from our enemies. Really??!!! I suggest anyone thinking this should read this book, then Cleopatra, Aztec and throw in a few tomes written about Margaret Thatcher, Queen Victoria, Golda Meier, etc.... Personally, I never had a doubt, but if I did, after reading this book, I'd hightail it to the nearest polling place and mark my X in any women candidates boxes!!!! This sultan's wife never leaves the harem from the time she enters while managing to take down an empire piece by designated piece. No one is safe! Her own children are a target for her revenge that begins 35 years previously and beyond the grave for generations. All we ever hear about the history if Sultan Suleiman from the 1500's is the great love affair between these two...no one seems to question why her husband seeks to end the lives of his own children. Don't want to give away a very good read, albeit supposition as to the whys and hows!!!! Read it yourself! It's worth the gross errors if you enjoy history, historical romance novels and, definitely, women's genre! I'm pretty sure who I'm voting for president this year myself!

I've read a number of Colin Falconer's books. He is a very good storyteller and his books generally keep you engaged. Harem was the exception for me. Although there are a number of interesting subplots, the two characters who drive the outcome of the book are either unrelentingly evil or astoundingly stupid. That, in itself, would not have doomed the book, but there are several mistakes that are just too glaring to excuse. For example, an important character dies early in the book, only to show up later. Apparently, the author decided to change the story arc for that character, but failed to make the necessary correction. Add to that the hundreds of grammatical and editing errors, and you basically have a bit of a mess. Hopefully, Mr. Falconer will hire better editors in the future.

What upset me most about this wretched book is that it many will read it and think it is plausible depiction of the reign of Suleiman the magnificent. In a well crafted work of historical fiction, the author weaves his story into the silent spaces in the historical record; filling the gaps in what is known with a tale that is compelling and believable. This piece is a sad mockery of that genre. We known that during his unprecedentedly long reign, Sultan Suleiman broke with all established traditions in his relationship with a concubine of probable Ukrainian origin who he renamed Hurrem "the laughing one." Not only did she bear him five children; four sons and a daughter, breaking the one concubine one son rule, he granted her freedom, married her and kept her by his side when her sons were sent to assume their governorships within the empire. We know that she was his political confidant and that that she was the patron of several charitable projects in Mecca, Jerusalem and Istanbul. We know that her influence over the Sultan and affairs of state were referenced in letters and various historical records. There is also evidence of her rivarly with the mother of Crown Prince Mostafa and suggestion of conspiracy in his death with the Grand Vizer Rostom Pasha (who was her son in law). Falconer is correct, we do not know what is in the hearts of the dead, but to construct from this skeleton of information a portrait of a soulless, conniving woman so singular focused on revenge is nothing short of the same myopic misogyny surrounding accounts of other historically powerful women or women who defied tradition and convention. The historical Roxelana was kidnapped from her family, sold into slavery and was by her whits (and most likely trickery and deception as needed) able to rise to power. While the poetry left by Sultan Sulieman suggests he was "bewitched" by her, Falconer's shallow assumption that she was, therefore, a witch is as jarring as the books many typos and errors.
