Amazon.com Review

Originally published in 1973, Who Needs Donuts is a sweet visual feast that will have kids (and nostalgic parents) poring over its rich tableaus for hours. Every inch of each black-and-white page is covered in detailed, delightful drawings, at times bringing to mind the two-dimensional cartoons of Saul Steinberg, at others the scratchy realism of Lynda BarryÂ’s comics. In fact, there is so much to look at in this short, simple story that new discoveries are sure to be made with each successive reading (of which there are bound to be countless). Young Sam, clad (inexplicably, yet charmingly) in cowboy duds, already has a nice house with a big yard and lots of friends, but he feels nonetheless that something is missing. He mounts his trusty trike and heads for the big city in search of one thing: donuts, and not just a few, but "More than his mother and father could ever buy him." His quest is rife with humor and adventure, not to mention a man in paisley suit and a woman named Pretzel Annie. Kids will adore the no-holds-barred kookiness displayed throughout (a street vendor selling fried oranges with optional mayonnaise; a "self-service" restaurant where the waiters look exactly like the customers), and adults will smile at the hippie-era moral that love is all you need. As the flap illustration warns, "This book is addictive," but this sugar habit need not be kicked. (Ages 5 to 10) --Brangien Davis

From the Inside Flap

Sam’s love of donuts takes him to the Big City where he makes friends with Mr. Bikferd, a world class collector of donuts. But when Mr. Bikferd falls in love with Pretzel Annie, the prophecy of an old homeless woman comes true: “Who needs donuts when you’ve got love?” Mr. Bikferd bequeaths his donut collection to Sam, who uses it to save the old homeless woman from drowning in a basement flooded with coffee. This is a reissue of Mark Alan Stamaty’s masterpiece of the absurd, first published 30 years ago and out of print nearly as long. With an illustration style that mixes a benign Hieronymus Bosch with an urban Where’s Waldo?, Stamaty’s off-the-wall humor is on target for little kids and big kids today.

I am Japanese-American, who will be 43 in 2016 (to give you an idea as to where, when, and how I grew up). I remember reading this as a kid. I contend that kid books are ADULT books too, because as an adult, "you can view the kid books through a different prism, from a different perspective, and absorb different messages." With the internet, I am able to remember and look up many books that I read as a kid (if anybody has "Stubborn Bear" by Robert Bigelow and the SCARY whale picture, please Message me), and read different perspectives on them: Messages and ideas that I did not consider, when I read them as a youngster. As a kid, this was a story mostly about donuts, and Sam's desire for donuts. I thought about the book a couple of years ago, SPECIFICALLY about a certain page: After Mister Bickferd ran off with Pretzel Annie, I can remember Sam's bewildered look, and asking Mr. Bickferd, "Don't you want to collect donuts anymore?" I got choked up thinking about that picture, and when I got this book and re-read it, I needed Kleenex, reading that page!! Because, as an ADULT, what that, and the next two or three pages provided me, was the realization that Sam had a "breakthrough," where FRIENDSHIP proved more important than MATERIAL goods. What I didn't remember was, when Sam asked himself, "What am I going to do with all of these donuts," and that when he tried to eat one, he couldn't finish it, was the line (to paraphrase), "Collecting donuts didn't seem as fun without Mister Bickferd." Using something from MY era, let's say that I wanted to play video games more than anything. Then, I met a friend with HUNDREDS of games, had fun playing the games with him. Then, let's say that suddenly he found a girlfriend, or decided to take up sports, and he gave ME all of his video games. As a YOUNGSTER, I may have thought "Cool!" But, as an ADULT, like Sam losing Mr. Bickferd as a friend, me losing my video game scenario friend may have left me with an empty heart, because I would have felt the emptiness of "losing a friend." I probably would not have enjoyed the video games nearly as much. I think that junior high, high school, and college students SHOULD read this book too, because above all, it will open up your eyes to just how valuable great FRIENDSHIPS can be. At the BEGINNING of the book, it said that Sam had a nice house, a big yard, and a lot of friends. After he returned from his "donuts adventure," I'd venture to say that he appreciated his many friends THAT much more! Oh yes, and the DRAWINGS are downright fascinating, too!!

I was a little when this book was new, and I loved it. It is full of puns, plays on words and absurdities, which I think a lot of little kids love, especially when they're learning new things, like how to read. Point to something a kid has just learned and call it by the wrong name, and they will happily correct you and often think it hilarious that you don't know your dogs from your cats. This book is full of crazy things that kids know are insanely "wrong" and therefore funny. Just rereading the book today, they're still funny. Pigeons don't have horse's heads! Abraham Lincoln in New York? Walking a dog? Some things will be particularly funny to adults, and especially to New Yorkers: a store with a sign asking "all customers please go away," a pay phone with a sign that says, "Phone is not in working order. Place donation in coin slot," and a sidewalk food vendor selling "fried oranges with mayonnaise." Absolutely everywhere you look in this book, there are crazy things to see in Stamaty's incredibly detailed pen and ink drawings--drawings that make my jaw drop just to look at them and think of the amount of time and work that went into them. The story itself is also silly but sweet, and speaks to little kid desires and fantasies and what would happen if a kid got to live those little kid dreams (the look on Sam's face when he is crazed with donuts is priceless). It's also about helping people and the importance of relationships. There's a lot going on in this little book!

I still read it as an adult. My brothers and I would stare at it together when we were kids, pointing out details to one another. Before the book was reprinted, a friend spent a ton of money on an auction to get a copy for my brother as a wedding gift. It's that special. With the reprint, I was able to buy a bunch and give them out everywhere. I saved one for myself to add to the original tattered copy from our childhood. The drawing is dynamite, and the story is quite touching.

I"ve been accused of being too serious, but I laughed out loud many times in this book. How about a store for used toe decals? The fine print is hysterical. Not a book for two year olds though. I looked at it at a friend's and had to order it for myself so that i wouldn't pass up any of the humorous stores. Although I am a senior citizen, any eight year old child would love this book

This was one of my very favorite books as a child, and I've wanted to find a reprint. Finally it is available!!This book is chock full of details. Every page is filled with fun and silly drawings, and about a ba-jillion little images that tell stories within stories within stories. I remember I loved to search the pages for something I hadn't seen before, and then create new stories from my own imagination. This book is about a happy boy that one day thinks he needs something else. He becomes obsessed with doughnuts and journeys to try to collect them all-- he can't get enough. In the process, he adventures away from home and all through the city. There is plenty of ridiculousness and just plain loony stuff in this book, which makes it particularly fun and memorable. This is a perfect gift for a very creative or imaginitive child (or adult). "Who Needs Donuts?" is fun and entertaining, but also makes you feel happy with what you have in life.

Who Needs Donuts was a gift when our first child was a baby, many years ago, and its tale and drawings of a super funky, '60s era NYA provided many happy evenings of bedtime reading. We've continued to give it as a gift to friends with newborns over the years, and no one has been disappointed. Appropriate for kids of any age, including yours truly, in his fifth decade. Hey, it's about donuts and love, so, like, how can you go wrong?

The author had me at the first sentence. I spent the rest of the book trying to figure it out. Turns out I was wrong. This is a fiction book, based on the recounting of the author's memories of life with her younger sister. I did not realize it was the author until I saw Bette used as the name of the narrator. What a gripping, page turning book! Having a sister, I completely understood the emotions the author shared with the reader. Donna, the younger sister, was the carefree sister. Bette, the oldest sister, was the careful one. Geri, the youngest sister, moves in and out of this book. Their mother, Mama, is another person who is present throughout the entire book. I have a daughter and so can understand some of Mama's thoughts and actions. We have all made decisions that were not in our best interest at one point or another in our lives. Donna, though, seems to have a knack for making those more often than not. She falls in love with Charlie, marries him, has a son, divorces Charlie. She remarries Charlie, has a daughter, divorces Charlie. However, some of her best decisions are showcased in her relationship with her daughter Debi. Debi is an incredible tribute to Donna.Donna shows strength when the reader may not be expecting it. She makes a decision that seems to be counterproductive but turns out to be the best for her situation. Looking at things through another's eyes instead of always using our own eyes sometimes leads to miscommunication and misunderstanding. That was almost the case for the two older sisters. What wonderful memories the author must have and how fortunate I am that I read her book detailing many of them.

Blueberry Hill. If you've ever loved and lost a person, read this book. If you've ever loved someone who struggles with addiction, read this book. If you've ever wrestled with accepting a loved one's path, read this book.Once again write-from-the heart author, BetteLee Crosby has delivered a story that tugs at your heart strings and nudges you to consider the choices and people in your own life. This fictionalized memoir entertains, challenges and soothes. BetteLee shines the lens on her own family and relationships and allows readers to share a private and painful part of her own life. Poignant and engaging, raw and honest, there is real truth revealed. It is simultaneously, both her story and a universal story with which readers can identify. Like all books of quality, the story stays with you, inviting you to explore its full power over time.Loyal followers of BetteLee Crosby will not be surprised by the emotional richness of the book. New readers will quickly become members of the BetteLee Fan Club. I rate Blueberry Hill 5***** I started it last night and coudn't put it down!

Bette Lee Crosby has done it again with another exceptional read. Bette's stories are easy to read and are about regular people with regular lives and doing the best they can. This story, Blueberry Hill, is particularly touching. You are introduced to sisters growing up in a simpler time. Bette is the oldest and the quiet one. Donna is the daring one and has an "I want to have it all attitude". Donna is fearless and emotionally strong. Bette is not very daring and is timid. She admires Donna's fearlessness and wishes she could be more like her.Within the covers of this delightful story is the growing up of these 2 girls and how their lives turn out. When Donna falls ill and has to have a procedure that leaves her without a voice, you discover how truly determined and strong this woman is. Bette calls and visits her sister frequently. Donna continues to live independently not wanting too much help. One day, Bette decides that she just has to find a Bichon for her sister. She wants to give her sister a companion to replace the cat that had run away from home. While Bette and Dick were driving to Donna's, Bette worried that her sister would not accept the gift. It all turned out so well. The gift of the little Bichon just made Donna's day and she instantly fell in love with the little guy.Donna does not seem to improve over the next 2 years. The day Bette catches her smoking upsets her so much. Bette has convinced herself that her sister will get better with time. This brought back so many memories for me. My father was a heavy smoker and also had emphysema, he passed away at 58 just before my sixteenth birthday. It was said to see such a lively and vibrant person deteriorate into the shell of the man he was by the time he passed. I understand completely what Bette was feeling and the denial she lived with. This is such a wonderful story that is both sad and happy, but a touching tribute for a loved one lost too soon.

I have never read a book by Bette Lee Crosby that I didn't love. And as usual, this one did not disappoint. In fact, with this being the story of her life and relationship with her sister made it touch me even more. I'm sure it was hard to write at times. But she tells it so well. There are heart breaking as well as heart warming moments in this book. All are told in the down to earth way that the author writes. You will come to feel as if you are her best friend or part of the family. You'll be happy with her and you'll cry with her. If you have a sister, this story will tug at your heart strings.Bette, as the eldest sister, grew up feeling responsible for the care of her younger sisters, especially her middle one. This is difficult even as a parent if a child is strong willed as her sister was. You will get so caught up in this story that you won't want to put it down.I highly recommend this book as well as any books by Bette Lee Crosby! She writes books that touch your heart.

Geoff Kersey is one of my favourite watercolourists, and not only does he have an incredible talent for painting, but he also has a wonderful teaching style...probably the best teacher I have ever experienced, which is very difficult to achieve in book form. I also subscribe to ArtTutor.com where Geoff has many video classes, and his teaching style in videos also is second to,none. I have learned more from Geoff Kersey than from any other watercolour artist.

I just received this today, but looking through it, it seems to be a good book full of ideas to try out the next time I paint. I enjoy his paintings and that is one thing I consider when I look at books to help with my painting. If I don't paint in the same style it's not as encouraging to receive inspiration from the directions. I may order another of his books later. These books are not as big as the regular 11x8 painting books but it makes them handy to take along when you go outside to paint.

Fantastic book. I am going to purchase several more of his watercolor instruction books now

This book is filled with excellent tips that WORK. Geoff is now my "go to" person for help with watercolor. His DVD is also amazing. Highly recommended.

This book is a great resource for the the watercolorist at any level. It is informative for the beginner & a refresher for those more experienced. The book is a good addition to the artist's library. The format of the book is very practical with the lay flat feature being very convenient.

Good presentation of his ideas and methods along with some alternatives. Makes you realize that there are other ways to apply paint and get the result you want. Like his style of painting.

I'm a beginner with watercolors. I've been dabbling for about 6 months. I have had a few lessons here and there. The problem I've encountered with teachers is getting them to give me a straight answer!!! I opened this book and immediately saw the answers to the questions that have bothered me. I'll be looking into some of Geoff's other books as well.

I like this book almost as much as others I have

Review

As Saint Paul says, we must expose the works of darkness. With Kermit Gosnell as one example of a tragic pattern, my colleague Cheryl Sullenger has once again done what she does best, and has exposed abortion!-Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director, Priests for Life Kermit Gosnell is not the only abortionist to break the law, as Sullenger's book explains. It illustrates the need for prosecutors and courts to set aside politics and enforce abortion laws in the interest of justice.-Phill Kline, Former Kansas Attorney General, District Attorney and State Legislator In The Trial of Kermit Gosnell, Cheryl Sullenger debunks the Planned Parenthood myth of "safe, legal and rare abortions." While the Gosnell saga is the proverbial "tip of the iceberg," readers will understand the need to expose legal abortion's underbelly and to join the movement to end the scourge.-Evangelist Alveda King, civilrightsfortheunborn.com There is no person who better understands the horrors occurring behind the closed doors of abortion facilities than Cheryl Sullenger, who has spent years documenting and exposing abortion abuses. In The Trial of Kermit Gosnell, Sullenger reveals the full story of the courtroom drama that shocked and outraged America. This page-turning narrative of murder, abortion, political cover-ups, and regulatory failure shatters the facade of "choice," and demonstrates that Gosnell isn't the only abortionist committing barbaric crimes in America. Once you read this book, you will never view abortion the same way again.David Bereit, Former CEO of 40 Days for Life Shocking! Revealing! The Trial of Kermit Gosnell is the roadmap to ending abortion and sending abortionists to jail.-Mark Harrington, National Director, Created Equal If it's just about the truth, if you believe facts don't cease to exist because they're ignored, then The Trail Of Kermit Gosnell by Cheryl Sullenger is a book on your mind and in your library.-Walter B. There are more Gosnells out there, we must strive to end the killing.-Dr. Day Gardner, President, National Black Pro-Life Union The Trial of Kermit Gosnell is a captivating account of abortion crimes that reveals the corruption that enables them. It is a must-read for everyone!-Fr. Terry Gensemer, Director, CEC For Life (Charismatic Episcopal Church) Without the hard work of Cheryl Sullenger, the public might never have heard of Kermit Gosnell. Cheryl hounded the district attorney, pored over documents late at night, and traveled to Philadelphia to attend the trial when there was only a couple of local news reporters in the courtroom. As you read her book, you will feel like you are sitting in the courtroom with her, experiencing all the emotions of one of the most important abortion-related trials in history.-Troy Newman, President, Operation Rescue

This book was riveting from the time I picked it up to the finish! Well written. An expose on the ugly underbelly of the abortion industry, and the callous attitudes, and shoddy practices of doctors, nurses, and ancillary staff towards the patients, and their innocent offspring. Abortion is a dangerous practice, maiming and killing women far more often than is reported, murdering innocent children in various stages of development in the womb, and claiming macabre "trophies" from their helpless victims. This is a clarion call to end this barbaric practice which has scarred the souls of this Nation for decades.

Important material for every American to become aware of - and it seems to me there are a lot who don't have a clue.I can't remember the last time I bought a book that had suffered such a bad job of copy-editing. As many as six mistakes on a page. That distracts from the book's content, however interesting that may be.A bit heavy on the self-promotion side for the author and Operation Rescue. If I had to choose between the two, I'd pick the 2017 book on Gosnell by the Irish journalist couple.

If you want your eyes opened to the atrocities of the average abortion clinic that isn't regulated, read this book about Kermit Gosnell. Wow!

Very Heard to read. Cheryl puts it in perspective. He is and are serial killers.

I bought it because of the reviews.. wow.. Im so disappointed. First of all, it gets really annoying to read because of all the grammar and spelling errors that are so obvious. Im wondering how the heck did this even get published ? Doesn't publisher have any standard anymore.. or is it just me. Then there is a lot of stuff written that doesn't even have anything to do with Gosnell and his atrocities and gets so tedious to read that i just skipped through it, in fact i skipped through so much that wasn't related to gosnell's case that i think i might have just skipped through half the book.

This is the best book I have read on the Gosnell case. The author was present at the trial and brings a wealth of background information to the events. On the downside, the kindle version of the book is riddled with errors, probably from scanning the book without checking the accuracy.

Excellent book relating the ugly facts about abortion that any woman contemplating an abortion (either via drugs or surgery) should read before making that life ending and life degrading decision.

If not pro life before the book, you should be after reading it. Especially after finding out Gosnell's story is not an isolated event. Sadly, there are other clinics that are just as deplorable.
