GICHIN FUNAKOSHI is world famous as one of Karate's great masters. Absolutely love that book. Although I'm attending the classes myself for more than half a year already and had a lot of philosophy related discussions by now - most of the stuff gave me totally new perspective to The Art and made me re-think what I do and how I even approach the classes. Also gave a great insight into the different cultural world. Will definitely return to it from time to time.

Having practiced karate for just under two years, I thought this book would help me better to understand the true meaning of karate. I knew that commitment, respect, endurance, strength, etc. were all values, but after reading this book about the life of Gichin Funakoshi, it has really opened my eyes to what karate really is.First and foremost, this is an autobiography. It isn't an action book full of stories of fighting and taking down the bad guys. It's a foray into his life, how he feels about karate, and what it has meant to him and his family. He tells of his successes and failures, tips for healthy living and longevity, and most of all, what karate means to him.Gichin Funakoshi was responsible for bringing karate to mainland Japan, which allowed it to spread throughout the world following World War II. In this book, he brings new meaning to all of those sayings and phrases that you see pasted throughout dojos all over the country, like spirit, tranquility, and respect.I think anyone involved in any martial art, especially karate, should read this book. I'm glad I did, and it is definitely something I'll read again in the future.

This is a very short book by Funakoshi, the founder of Shotokan Karate. It covers how he got into training in Karate, covers some of the history of how Karate came into Okinawa/Japan, and has some fun and interesting stories about some of the Masters that Sensei's love to quote (Matsumura, Itosu, etc). I have trained in Shito Ryu for a long time, not Shotokan, but the history goes back to the same Masters, which makes for an interesting read.This book won't make you a great fighter, but it will give you some insights into the mind of the Masters and give some interesting history in the process.

Every practitioner needs to read this remarkable story of this Master, regardless of your style. The hardships and disciplines truly make a difference in traditional Martial Arts. Great read!!

This is a great book for anyone taking Shotokan Karate. This is more of an autobiography on Funakoshi. I think his life is very interesting. He tells of how he was a very sick boy but became 100 times healthier through his study of karate. This book gives his philosophy on the way he lived his life. He reminds us that everybody starts out as a beginner and the true nature of what karate really is. Anyone can learn karate, there is nothing super human about it. If you are interested in the origins of karate and how Shotokan became organized and introduced to the world, then this would be a great book for you. It's an easy read and very much enlightening.

A very well written book. Very informative but with the personal touch of the Grand Master.

This is one of Funakoshi's best books. As a practitioner myself there are several lessons in this book that I believe anyone studying martial arts can learn from. It's well written and the story's shared in it pages are also quite entertaining. Definitely worth the read.

This book is said to be the auto-biography of master Gichin Funakoshi. In his book Funakoshi describes how he was introduced to karate, how he had to sneak to his master, because Karate was forbidden by the Government. He tells short stories that happened to him (like: being attacked by thieves) and how useful Karate turned out to be through his life.As the title says, Funakoshi's idea was that Karate trains your body and mind and is thus a way of life. Karate in his opinion is not about fighting. At the back of the book he even points out that winning 100 of 100 battles is not as praiseworthy as subduing an enemy without fighting. Karate is not fighting, it is a martial art. It is not about being strong and though against others, but against oneself.If you believe that Karate is a fighting sport. If you believe that the tournaments and winning is all what this art is about, by all means avoid this book, for you will not understand its message. If however you are really open-minded and understand what I wrote above, you are up for an interesting read. And I believe that every Karateka should be interested in the origin of the art. That is what you will find here.No techniques, fighting guidelines and things like this. Just the interesting stories of a gentle and reasonable Taoist that Funakoshi was.

Recognition and sales of Chelsea Clinton's earlier book. "She Persisted: 13 American Women Who Changed the World," undoubtedly spurred her to tell these profound stories of girls/women in other countries with similar stories. Young people will find the same inspiring narratives about a different 13 girls/women; stories of profound spirits and passionate dedication to the causes to which they gave their lives. I was surprised - and embarrassed - to encounter a more of which I was unaware among the more familiar stories of Eve Curie, Malala Yousafzai, and Joanne ("J.K.") Rowling. Clinton has a rare gift of being able to tell a story in precious few words which are able to paint a portrait for girls from 9 to 90 that convey the subjects' dreams and challenges, persistence and obstacles - to their ultimate victories. Each story was told on a single page of large type, with a significant quote from each woman on the following page. As a wheelchair user myself, I was especially delighted that illustrator Alexandra Boiger included India's Dr. Mary Verghese on the cover. These aren't pink and frilly "girls' books," but rather powerful stories which can inspire girls to their own life's work and set boys on the path to respecting and valuing the potential of women as vital to our nation and the world. In these days when many adults have thrown up their hands and withdrawn from the crusades in which they were engaged, this pair of books is even more significant in inviting and challenging children to "keep on keepin' on" to make their own vital contributions.

This book and its predecessor are my 7-year-old's current favorite books. She even packed them to bring along on our spring break trip. I love that the bios of the women are relatively short, and easy for kids of all ages to understand. The book features women both well-known and not. The graphics are beautiful-- wonderful illustrations. I appreciate the message of the book, and enjoy having a wider variety of great role models for my two daughters.

A lovely book for my 6 year old reader. She feel in love with the first book and read it to her 1st grade class. So when the second book came out she begged for it as one of her school rewards. She sat down and red all the pages from front to back, and we talked about the various people and what they did. Some were familiar names to me, others were new to both of us and we had to look up more information. But it was delightful for her to see the impact all over the world that woman could have.

My 7 yr old daughter can't stop talking about it, and has interest in so many of the women discussed in this book.

A family friend of mine just adopted a little girl from China and live internationally, traveling frequently. I found this book on Amazon and thought it perfect for the little one’s first Christmas present with her new family. The parents loved it! The little girl isn’t quite proficient at English yet to understand the messages, but enjoys the colorful images and beautiful artwork. This book was a perfect gift and I plan to buy the American version for the little one’s birthday!

It's pretty hard to find any instructional material on gouache, of any quality or style, so I was excited to see a modern book by a non-cartoony painter on the medium. Unfortunately, the book seems a bit conflicted with itself about who exactly the audience is.The book devotes rather a lot of space to completely fundamental basics: what is still life, what is gouache, the inevitable list of supplies and equipment, how to stretch watercolor paper. A huge amount of space is devoted to subject matter and composition, including a remarkably brief account of perspective. A little is spent on using a grid to transfer a drawing, a bit on color, and then we're off.After that, a series of subjects are tackled. These are far beyond the elementary material given in the first few sections, with only a few in-progress images to guide you along the way. For example, the painting on the cover has a total of four images: the pencil sketch, two in-progress, one done. The book would have benefited from one or two middle chapters that took things slower with much more pictorial documentation about what was going on in terms of gouache consistency, color mixing, even basics like brushwork. A bit of this happens in the "Color and Techniques" chapter, but it moves very quickly, and some of the in-progress photos were photographed in inconsistent lighting, which hardly makes it easier to see what's going on.There is plenty of text in the book, and much excellent advice is given there, but it still sometimes seems like the first part of the book was written for one audience (utter beginners), and the second for an intermediate to advanced audience already familiar with painting, but new to gouache. Rudy de Reyna's long out of print "Painting in Opaque Watercolor" remains the better book for beginners.

As an experienced painter I found the book covered things I already know and use. A beginning painter would learn a great deal from reading this book. I wanted an all around tutorial on gouache techniques and this does give some, but it is more of a basic painting lesson. $20.00 was a lot to spend on information I already had.If you are an advanced painter, skip this one. If you are a beginner, buy this and read it; the information will apply to any painting method and you'll have a good foundation to build your own work on. It is well written and organized.

Nothing new to learn

Mr. Scully did a good job with this book. I'm looking forward to using his recommendations in my own studio. Worth the read and the money if you're looking to improve your gouache painting skill. (Five star reviews from me are rare as I'm a curmudgeon.)

This appears to be a good book, but I ordered it on Kindle. Should have known better.
