As Christians in America, we just do not face much persecution. This is the story of a couple that did, however. Not persecution from those out of the church, but those within.I spent many years living around the Amish in Ohio. I found them to be very hard workers, honest, and helpful. They were/are very dogmatic and strict as far as their church is concerned.This book follows the life of an Amish couple that were heavily involved in the church and its' doctrine of "works" as a way to heaven. When tragedy strikes, they just can't seem to feel the comfort they expected from God or the church. They begin a search for a personal relationship with Christ that ultimately introduces them to entry into heaven by "Grace". They find true peace and acceptance as they grow in the teachings of Christ. They do, however pay the price of basically losing their friends and family of the Amish community. This is a must read especially for those that are in a church/religion because of 'tradition' and family influence. The search for Christ is a personal search. When you find Him, things change.Read this story of dedication and faith. I hope you will be inspired to 'follow your heart' as you travel toward the cross and Gods' grace.
I am always reading Amish fiction and knew I would definitely be interested in this book as it held an inside scoop into the life of being Amish. I wanted to know more about what they taught and believed and why. Ora-Jay and Irene had such a sweet heart. I was heartbroken to read about the death of their 2 daughter and how finally, after many boys, they received a bundle of joy that was a girl! They shared how the death of their daughters was a turning point for them. It was neat to watch their faith grow out of this dark time. It amazes me how the Amish are able to simply say, "God must have wanted it to be so." They weren't really expected to grieve, which I can't even imagine. I appreciated the very personal letters at the end of most of the chapters. It was interesting to read their hearts and what was going on in their lives at that point. You could also easily see their spiritual growth through each letter. My favorite story had to be how the Lord provided for them when they didn't have the money to pay for some land. The fact they lived in their basement with no electricity or running water was amazing. They truly were living harder then the Amish and they were still judged. This is such an insightful book for those that like the Amish lifestyle or like Amish fiction. It's also an excellent book if you want to see someone who questioned all he knew and gave it up to follow the Lord. I thoroughly enjoyed this book but it was also very sad. I understand why this family pulled away from the Amish and I have a hard time understanding the way the Amish believe. How can you love God and serve Him and treat your family members as this couple was treated. It doesn't matter what your church affiliation is but there is only way to heaven and that is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ on the Cross for our sins. Jesus died a horrible death so that we could be saved from our sins and spend eternity with him. When we have accepted Jesus Christ personally we are expected to follow the example of Jesus. We may not agree with everyone and even those who have accepted Jesus Christ but we are to show the same love that Jesus did to the saved and the unsaved. My heart broke for this couple and especially for the way they were treated even by their family. At least through their loss they found Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and I guess maybe what they suffered was worth it all...
It's hard to believe that anyone living in late 20th-century America would be forbidden by one's own church to read the Bible in his own language, English, or that services would be conducted in a language few people understood; yet this was the case for Ora-Jay and Irene Eash. If you ever read Amish fiction or non-fiction, you should definitely read this book. And if you've ever been under a teacher who placed a greater emphasis on what the preacher said or other people thought than what the Bible says and God thinks, you should read this, too. I rated this four stars because the beginning was slow. Also, I, for one, would have enjoyed more details when they first read scriptures that confused them or contradicted what the couple had been taught. I love a book that allows a look into the mind and heart struggles when one undergoes when encountering new ideas. This does eventually share some of those struggles. This book was an easy read. I will probably read it a second time, ruminating over more of the scriptures, now that I know how the situations with both sets of in-laws turned out.
This book was awesome! Having left the institutional church over 10 years ago, my wife and I could relate to so much of what we read. We were also a part of the "Shepherding movement" and left that behind too. I love their journey and how holy spirit gently guided them to freedom. Thank you so much for being authentic and real and having the courage to write this book. Definitely a "classic" in my opinion.
This is an interesting story. I really enjoy reading stories of people leaving the Amish and why/how they left. This was one such story, but was also interesting by the fact that it was two adults, baptized into the church and with children, who left. Losing their daughters shook them up and really made them look at their beliefs. Their story is quite interesting, but the down side is that it got a little too preachy for me. Granted, I am not at all religious, but I got tired of hearing how great God is. However, I am glad these people finally read the bible for themselves and decided what they wanted to believe when being Amish didn't work for them.
