A classic. This first edition from 1981 was the one used at my school when I took this class, also in 1981, actually for my Intermediate Finance class.Funny thing about this book, or maybe it's just the topic of Finance in general, but I also purchased Brealey & Myers' most recent edition from about 2017 or so, and not much has changed! They have added a few topics, updated tax law changes, and expanded details a little here and there, but in many chapters, page after page reads identically in the 36-year-newer edition when compared, page by page, with this first volume! Although newer editions are in color and are glossy, a far cry from the really basic and cheap ink and paper used in this very first edition (which does have high-quality hardcovers, though), despite the fact that 1981 was still modern times back then re: book printing. Virtually all other textbooks were a lot prettier than this one even then! While this book has much practical application, it is a bit more theoretical than the Weston and Brigham book I used for my 1980 introductory class, which was also excellent in its own way. I think this Brealey and Myers textbook is considered a little sexier in the field, but sadly, as I look back at it, there is much that makes me wonder why I ever majored in finance-- in that there wasn't so much to learn that would have practical application, even to someone like me who works in the field of finance. And in this book, after one gets past the early chapters, including the ones on Present Value/Future Value and on Net Present Value, the topics become more and more theoretical and esoteric. For example, it's not likely that stocks paying fixed dividends in perpetuity, supernormal growth measures, indifference curves, etc., are actually in use in the real world. I'm certainly unaware of any portfolio managers using any of these calculations in the real world.I also observe that nowadays, the accounting textbooks go into not only financial analysis, such as ratio analysis and more, but they also delve into present value/future value calculations. I honestly think that accountants are getting a better practical education for which they're qualified to obtain lots more jobs than are finance majors, and even at my own company I've noticed that there are finance positions held by people who have only accounting degrees, without any more dedicated finance education than the introductory class. It makes me wonder.Back to this book: I have read through, without reading every page of, at least 6 of the leading introductory Finance textbooks on the market presently, along with some intermediate and advanced books, and I would notice that they all claim to provide much theory AND much practical application, as if each is unique in that way. They are not! But I do think Brealey and Myers are perhaps originators of more currently-taught material than the others.Anyway, if you have the choice of reading a finance textbook (as opposed to being assigned it by a prof), and you like the topic, then I recommend this particular book and specifically this very first (1981 copyright) edition, which clearly focuses on the topics that these 2 authors, already well-recognized in the field then, thought most important. I wouldn't worry about possible errors (and the notion that they may be corrected in later volumes that would thus be more accurate), as you can see from the preface that this book was well-reviewed by many colleagues and fellow finance professors around the country during the drafting phase. But by getting the first edition, you really get to see what was most strongly on the authors' minds before they started expanding in later years in order to make their book similar to the other textbooks on the market.

While this is a classic book for learning corporate finance in business schools, it has many problems. The main issue is that the book is very poorly written. While professionals and academics in many other fields have advanced the art of plain English writing in the last decades, business school professors and students are lagging thousands of miles behind. It was tiresome to read the text and to find clear explanations and answers while trying to learn the material.

Be careful with this book, as it is the Indian Edition, but the product description doesn't indicate that. This means that it is an adapted version of the book for the Indian market. The concepts are the same, but examples might differ in terms of units used (rupees vs. dollars). Another important difference is that this edition talks about Indian Treasury bonds market instead of the US, which might be relevant. However, overall I think it's a good deal, since it costs like 10% of the American edition and the content is mostly the same.

This is the super old version. Not what a professor will require for a current class.

This is one of the better finance texts I've come across. It still is a finance text though, so I can't really say that it's in any way enjoyable.

The book was used for our MBA finance course. This book has so much fluff that is just difficult to read through. The authors keep rambling so much about 'stuff' that the main idea gets lost. On the other hand, some chapters (e.g. cash budgeting) has not been covered in sufficient details. I got so bored that I purchased the Ivo Welch book http://www.amazon.com/Corporate-Finance-Ivo-Welch/dp/0984004955/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1351899001&sr=8-1&keywords=ivo+welch and it is MUCH better. Alas, the Ivo Welch book has content that does not align with our course curriculum. I also had access to the following book http://www.amazon.com/Fundamentals-Corporate-Finance-Standard-Stephen/dp/0073382396/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1351899077&sr=1-1&keywords=finance+ross and it is a much more readable book. What a terrible waste of money!!! Do yourself a favor and skip the BMA book!!!

description as is.

This is by no means a good introduction book to finance which is why I bought it. Granted my review is ten years late, it may serve well to warn about future editions. I have a shallow understanding of a broad amount of business topics and have taken the requisite accounting and economics classes in your typical undergrad but from the very beginning this book is discouraging. I will also say that I'm trying to read it plainly without engaging in any of the math and formulas presented. Even so, it is some math that should be able to be glanced at and understood easily but is not. Terms are given brief explanations and loosely defined then used liberally throughout. A total mess and should be avoided if it is even among the tenth book on general finance you've read so far. I will credit it that it is dense and that is why I bought it because since it is an older edition it is selling a vault of information at a steeply discounted price yet what's the value if you spend hours reading it only to end up scratching your head in confusion, frustration, and disappointment?
