Mastering Manga is an excellent how-to-draw manga, a perfect gift for the aspiring manga artist in the family and a superb resource for those with a bit more advanced skills on all things manga. With this book, Mark Crilley is able to deliver his easy-to-follow tutorials and provide a plethora of material for a quick reference. As such, this book is a terrific companion to his YouTube tutorials. This book is divided into 3 Chapters, with some introductory and final sections:IntroductionWhat You NeedMaking the Manga EyeCharacter DesignChoosing your StyleChapter 1: Head and FacesChapter 2: Proportion and PosesChapter 3: Setting the SceneConclusionThis book starts with an introduction "written with pictures", in a six panel spread. This is used sporadically, when a little of "verbosity" is required like in the Introduction, the Character Design section and the Conclusion. For the most part, this is a how-to-draw manga book. All tutorials are at least seven steps long. The initial tutorials in chapter 1 may seem simple if you already have some experience drawing manga, with classics such as female front view and ¾, male front view and profile, and adult front view and ¾, a less conventional full-figure front view, and ¾, and a child front view and profile. However, these tutorials build up in skill and detail and towards the end of chapter 2 you are drawing two character scenes such as kissing or fighting. In addition, you have plenty of reference material that you can quickly use as inspiration for your own manga. This is what interested me the most from this book at first. Between chapter 1 and chapter 2 you get 20 Female Hairstyles, 20 Male Hairstyles, 101 Manga Eyes, 12 Common Manga Facial Expressions, 20 Chibi Emotions, 50 Ways to Draw Hands, 50 Ways to Draw Feet, 30 Classic Poses, and plenty of tips about clothing such as Clothing Folds and Wrinkles, Dress Pants and Jeans, Skirts, T-Shirts, Sweaters and Coats. In chapter 3, you start with some basic instructions about perspective, covering one-point, two-point and three-point perspectives, and building up scenes with each method in five-step tutorials. However, it gets more interesting with tips about inking, paneling, page layouts, word balloons and sound effects. This section is not very extensive so you get but a few examples of these subjects, but these are good enough for a quick reference.Being only 128 pages long, this book may seem thin for some. However, if you already own a large collection of how-to-draw manga book, you would appreciate a reference book that you could easily flip through in search for you next of inspiration.

Like most people, I discovered Mark Crilley from his excellent tutorials on Youtube. I had high expectations of this book because I know he's a great teacher, but I wasn't sure how it would compare with the videos. You're probably wondering what you get from buying a book that the Youtube videos don't show for free. I've watched lots of Mark Crilley's tutorials, but there's something special about seeing the drawing printed on the page in front of me, there as a reference. If you wanted to, you could trace drawings for practice. The book also allows you to go at your own pace, which may take much longer than a ten-minute video can allow for. I think the book works well on its own or in combination with the videos. The book is divided into three chapters: Heads and Faces, Proportions and Poses, and Setting the Scene. The bulk of the book is made up of step-by-step guides for drawing specific character types. Adults, teens, kids and toddlers are covered, as well as chibis. The written instructions give tips about showing the gender, age and personality of the characters. One thing that sets this book apart is that several pages are devoted to portraying fuller-figured characters, something that I haven't seen much in other manga how-to books. There are also more advanced tutorials for kissing poses and drawing a martial arts scene, as well as thorough instruction for drawing folds and wrinkles in clothing. Some of the most useful content is towards the end. There's information about inking drawings, laying out panels and adding speech bubbles and sound effects. One of the most interesting parts is a page showing Mark Crilley's process in creating a manga page from start to finish.Quite a few page spreads feature a large number of small drawings, for example 101 manga eyes or 50 ways to draw hands. These are good for reference and include some pointers, but there are some that would be worth expanding into a full step-by-step tutorial. I'd love a whole book based on the 20 classic poses! Perspective and backgrounds are covered in the third chapter, and this is another area that I wouldn't mind seeing expanded. The tutorials cover the technicalities of perspective, but they don't show much about how to work characters into these settings. I would also have liked to see more discussion of shading and color. Everything included in the book is great and it's absolutely packed with helpful information on every page, but I do think the author has even more to offer and I'd love it if this turned out to be the first part of a series. One final note: There's no nudity in this book; all figures are drawn either fully clothed or wearing simple underclothes. Busty vixens and muscle men are notably absent. There's no gore, the content is very family-friendly. This book would be an appropriate gift for adolescents interested in drawing manga. However, the detailed level of instruction would probably be too difficult for young children.

I love drawing but I have never done manga before but it is really similar to drawing realistically and this book will help you with that as well. I found out about Mark Crilley by watching his YouTube videos and he does such a good job explaining how to draw manga that I went ahead and got this. It goes over some of the same things he does in his videos but this is a nice step by step guide that you can just pull out whenever. Plus it covers a lot that aren't in his videos as well. The book is easy to follow and goes step by step. He shows you everything he does in each step and also gives you various tips and tricks as well. He shows you templates that you can use for every drawing you make and how to master drawing different people. He goes over the basic things you will need like pencils and such. He starts out with the basics and shows you how to make eyes. He them goes on to making faces and eventually he shows you how to draw the whole body. He gives you a fast and simple step by step drawing that you can then go on to add details and whatever else you want. The book also covers various poses, how to add wrinkles to clothes, and even how to make your own manga. He shows you the layout for making drawings of various sized people from little girls all the way to heavier people. He also briefly shows you how to make scenery.Overall this is a great book if you want to start drawing manga and I cant recommend it enough. Its really easy to follow and the drawings make it look so simple and you can draw them in no time. Also this is a good starting point if you want to learn how to draw realistic people since its the same principles really.
